Adventure isn’t always physical. Get your adrenaline kick by taking a ghost tour of Chillingham Castle for a spooky twist on the usual tourist attraction! Britain’s most haunted historic castle hosts ghost tours for most of the year and is open for day visits too (if you’re frightened of the dark!). No.12 Ford Cottage is only a few minutes on foot from Chillingham Castle, so if you like history, gorgeous leafy surroundings and the option of really discovering Northumberland’s historic past, this is the cottage for you. You can always retreat to the cottage after, get the fire going and close the shutters!

When you think of adventure you may not always think of Warkworth. This pretty, sleepy village is on the Northumbrian coast and is famous for its delicious tea rooms, galleries and gorgeous gift shops (also the home of Coquet Cottages!). Work up your appetite by caneoing down the river Coquet, taking in the sights and even passing the famous English Heritage site, ‘The Hermitage’. Any level of physical activity deserves a tasty reward – or even if you’ve just watched from the side line, you’re on holiday after all! Pop into Bertrams and sample one of their delicious homemade cakes – or favourite is the lemon and courgette cake – and sit by the fire in the winter or in their summer courtyard when the sun shines. by canoeing along down the river Aln. This experience is great for families of all ages and gives you a view of Northumberland from a different perspective.

Pack your lunch and plan a day trip to Matfen. This pretty little village is near Hexham and not too far from Newcastle upon Tyne. Built into the grounds of Matfen Hall you will find Go Ape, an adventure in the trees. You can swing from tree tops, zoom along zip wires and navigate obstacle courses, this fun day out is perfect for all of the family and is a guaranteed thrill seekers cup of tea!

This one’s is for you daredevils and thrill-seekers. Northumberland is a hidden surfers paradise. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Dukeahanamoku then get boarded up and enjoy a day of surfing! The hot spots are either Beadnell or Amble so you have the choice of two stunning coastlines to enjoy. Northside Surf are the best instructors around Amble and Boards and Bikes offering bike and surfboard hire in Beadnell. If you’ve never tried your hand at surfing before, take the plunge – literally! Walk down to Beadnell Bay from The Drift House and enjoy an early morning lesson.
