Comments from The Shiel’s Guestbook

Our visitors’ books are great to read through over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and provide a wealth of recommendations on the best places to eat and visit, as well as some useful tips to benefit other guests. We also send Guest Surveys to all our guests after their holiday and some of their comments are listed here too.

Many guests have listed recommendations for the same lovely places, such as Warkworth Beach, Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Barter Books, Holy Island and the Farnes, but for the sake of avoiding repetition in this particular format, we have omitted these recommendations, but they can still be read in full in the visitors’ books in The Shiel.

A very well-equipped cottage. It was comfortable and warm. We really enjoyed our stay in a beautiful setting. The flowers were a welcome extra.

I just had to write and say a huge thank you for the excellent service I have experienced from your company. I am so very impressed. I only booked our holiday cottage an hour or so ago and already I have received emails from you – one with the link to the guidebook. Plus, I have just received a text from the owners welcoming us and a link to even more information. I wish every company I dealt with had the same level of professionalism and excellent customer service. Thank you so much.

Excellent communication throughout to make our arrival seamless. The welcome basket was a lovely bonus. The house was incredibly well equipped and lacked nothing. The standard of all the fixtures, fittings and equipment made this a real home from home. It really has been a perfect break.

There were amazing panoramic views of the Chilterns. There was also a large shower downstairs. The comment about where to recycle glass was very helpful, another high standard property from Coquet Cottages.

The property was clean, and had a well equipped layout. There was an abundance of crockery and cutlery. The supply of dishwasher and laundry tablets was very welcome.

Th Cottage was absolutely lovely. It had everything we needed for a very comfortable week. The owner phoned us on the day of arrival to talk us through key information and couldn’t have been more helpful. We loved the location and it was clear that time had been taken to make the cottage feel cosy, welcoming and like a home from home.

We booked due to the location, modern furnishings, it looked very comfortable and had a good outlook. We would be delighted to return to the Shiel – as it was such a lovely property.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here in this beautiful cottage. We recommend the Potter Lobster and the Jolly Fisherman for eating out and North Side Surf School for catching waves! The location was perfect and we enjoyed the beautiful views. I’m sure we’ll be back in the future!

What a perfect house for a family holiday. The shield has been a fantastic base for a fabulous holiday with our one year old daughter. Everything has been thought of for a stay with a baby – the ‘real’ cot, toys and books and even the outdoor stuff to play with were such an unexpected bonus. She has absolutely loved it here – think our own house will seem quite boring on our return. Obviously the landscape and region speaks for itself but our favourite day was walking from Low Newton along Beadnell Beach in the sunshine.

Anna, Gareth and Esme September 2020

Great cottage and 4 days have gone all too quickly!

Pat & Bill September 2020

We loved the beaches and also enjoyed exploring the hill forts near Wooler. We also used the cake on our walks…. and wine did not get wasted.

September 2020

It was a lovely cottage with all the amenities supplied, along with great views of the countryside. We enjoyed the chocolate cake and jam in the welcome hamper during our stay.

Absolutely fantastic! We had a great holiday at The Shiel, which exceeded our expectations. The house was beautiful, simply decorated with a high quality kitchen and furnishings. It was spotlessly clean, wonderfully relaxing and quiet with beautiful views. It made an excellent base for exploring the area whilst still feeling remote and rural.

September 2020

We had a lovely stay. The cottage was very nice and had everything we needed. It is in a nice quiet location and has a big garden for children to play in.

The Shiel is a beautiful property and there are so many positive things to say about it. The location is excellent, being in peaceful and picturesque surroundings and is conveniently located for Bamburgh and Alnwick too. The quality of the furnishings and appliances are very good. Netflix was very good and gave us a choice of things to watch in the evening. Good quality towels are plentiful in the bedrooms and the overall cleanliness of the property was very good too. We were pleased to have a telephone call from the owners at the start of the holiday for advice, recommendations and that personal touch. Thank you

Another lovely stay at “the shiel”. The things we like best are the lounge upstairs and the lovely views, the cosy bedrooms and that the large kitchen area is well equipped.

Excellent accommodation in a lovely are. The cottage was very well equipped and we wanted for nothing. The Shiel was very clean, and the beds extremely comfortable. The milk in the fridge so we could have a drink (and cake) straight away after a 3 hour drive.

We had not hired a self-catering cottage for many years and when we did, we had quite a range of standards! When we walked into The Shiel between The Cheviot and Bamburgh, we just said “Wow!” – We could not believe the high quality accommodation in this cottage. The position is stunning. Mile upon miles of open farmland and countryside, with extensive views of The Cheviots, and sunsets to die for, even in early Autumn. Complete peace and quiet, darkness at night that one had forgotten. Yet, only a few miles off the A1, and easy access to small towns for essential shopping/Sunday papers ect. Wonderfully positioned for access to all the area has to offer, with the A1 providing a good and fast access to almost anywhere we wanted to visit, from Berwick upon Tweed (and a day in Edinburgh using the train from Berwick) in the North, down to Cragside at Rothbury in the South and a myriad of wonderful castles, beaches, stately homes and country walks much nearer the cottage. What a wonderful base to return to each day. Unbelievably well equipped kitchen, bathrooms (2), bedrooms and living areas. Beautifully and comfortably furnished throughout, with a real “generosity of spirit” with a wish for us to enjoy the cottage fully. The owners contacted us to check we had arrived safely and to go over a few “housekeeping” points and were available if we needed to ask anything. Can not thank the owners or Coquet Cottages enough for making such a wonderful, high quality property available.

Very cosy, comfortable cottage with excellent facilities. A coffee machine would be the only addition I could suggest. It was very cosy and clean, comfy beds. The kitchen was very well equipped. We really liked the jam and biscuits.

Lovely stay in “The Shiel”, cosy and well equipped. Peaceful location yet easy access to all the towns etc. We ate twice at The Percy Arms and food was delicious!!! We shall definitely be back to beautiful Northumberland again.

We had a fantastic, peaceful week at this beautiful cottage. It has fantastic views of the countryside. The welcome pack included bread, cakes, jam and a lovely bottle of red wine. Very convenient for the coast and for walks in the Cheviot hills. We loved Northumberland and will definitely be back.

July 2020

Had a glorious week in beautiful Northumberland. Excellent accomodation and guest information file. Lovely stay, great good and friendly people – enjoyed ourselves immensely.

Another wonderful stay in ‘The Shiel’. How peaceful it is here! There is never enough time to do everything so another visit is called for. We will recommend here to everyone as it is soo good! Thank you again.

We have enjoyed a lovely week here at this peaceful relaxing cottage, lots of lovely walks locally and a walk on Ross Sands is not o be missed, even thought it takes a while to reach the sea! Thank you for the recommendation Jon.

Had a wonderful sunny week in this lovely cottage. Perfect, you’ve thought of everything. Enjoyed eating breakfast in the garden with the house martins and butterflies. Love this area, especially Bmaburgh, Warkworth, Holy Island, Berwisk, Beadnell and Alnwick. Worth a trip to Floors Castle, Kelso, good food at The Apple Core in Lucker, but probably would need to book. Also lunch at Carnabys, Barn at Beal and Seahouses for fish & chips. See you again soon.

A most welcoming cottage with all the necessary amenities i.e dishwasher and washing machine!! Very comfortable and everything thought of. First holiday with our 2 granddaughters (aged 6 and 4) they were kept entertained with the toys, books, DVDs as well as trips to Bamburgh, Cragside and Holy Island. Etal Castle (especially the cannons), Lavender Tea Rooms at Etal were very welcoming for children and dogs. Have visited Northumberland a number of times and it never fails to “wow” us. Thanks Jon and Ruth for mentioning The Shiel to us at Judith’s 70th Birthday weekend.

Well, our fifth time to The Shiel, and our tenth visit to Northumberland (so Ally tells me) the weather has been pretty dreadful – certainly the worst we have seen it here, but that has forced us to (well, encouraged us!!) to try something new. The walkout to Ross Back Sands in lovely (listen for the curlews) and the walk on the beach at Newton Steads (left past The Joiners Arms and follow the narrow road until you think you’ll fall in the sea) along Beadnell Bay is lovely – super dunes to rn down, and to watch the oyster catchers pottering along. Enjoyed pizza at BOX (Swinhoe) and a Hinny’ from Trotters Bakery in Seahouses. Always lovely at Bamburgh (Ice Cream from Wyndenwell). If you can — go over the chain bridge – the border between England and Scotland. A beautiful spot and a significant placemaker. You can drop in ar the Honey Farm right next to it and see the bees at work. Bamburgh Castle is worth the trip if the weather means you need to get off the beach – lovely long walks, great views and not that for into Scotland (Kelso).

We have really enjoyed exploring Northumberland despite the weather. What a wonderful cottage to return too.

We have had a glorious week here. Loved the cottage and the view!! Had great weather and recommend “The Ship” at Low Newton for character and a lovely meal.

Enjoyed a fabulous week at The Shiel. Jon and Ruth’s attention to detail is excellent. Blessed with lovely weather to enjoy stunning Northumberland.

Lovely week with amazing weather. House martins completed their nest. Thank you so much for the welcome hamper. Gorgeous pizza at ‘The Apple Core’ in Lucker.

Amazing week in Shiel Cottage. Great location and only traffic on the road are the naughty lambs. Inner farne was fantastic seeing the birds.

Third year and once again we had the most marvellous time. It’s now very difficult to go elsewhere, it’s the most wonderful place. Thanks again for the memories.

Another great visit to Northumbria, made even better knowing we had. Excellent accommodation to come back to to each day.

Thank you we had such a good stay. We visited many places and loved the cottage. We all wish we could stay longer. We loved the Welcome pack.

The owners have done an amazing job and thought of everything. Beautifully furnished; clean, warm and in a wonderful location.

Excellent accommodation. Attention to detail is excellent. Very relaxing stay in a quiet area.

Had a great time in the cosy house. Had an interesting walk around Doddington. Nice lunch at the ice cream parlour in Wooler. Beach at Ross Back Sands quiet and wild in windy weather!

Penny & Mike from Bathgate

Wonderful first holiday with our gorgeous grandson (1 years old). The cottage has everything and more! So well catered for little ones. Our grandson has enjoyed the many toys and his own were left in the car! Such a lovely, relaxing place, which we have all thoroughly enjoyed.

Janet, Howard, Keith, Michelle & Henry from Teeside

Thank you for a very relaxing stay. The cottage is ideal in every way. A wonderful base to explore a new part of the country and to spend some special time with our daughter who came up from Durham for a few days. Still plenty more to see and enjoy so we’ll probably be back.

Nic & Kath from Isle of Man

Spot on in every way!

The Pollard Family from Barnsley

Lovely stay in a lovely cottage – you’ve thought of everything!

Ant, Joan, Dave & Kath from Newcastle Under Lyme

Lovely house! We really enjoyed relaxing here after our days out. Thanks.

Col, Marie, Patrick & Sean from Newark

Back again for our ninth visit to Northumberland and fourth at The Shiel. The weather, although not hot, was mostly warm and stable. Enjoyed our usual haunts- Low Newton walks and beach, Bamburgh beach for dune running. Lovely ice cream at Wydenwell. Carter’s the butchers for pies and pastries, Eleanor’s Byre and the lovely Kate at The Stable Yard near Craster. Check out Box Pizza next to Swinhoe, proper wood fired pizza with a splendid view across the sea. A wet day allowed us to go “home” to Scotland, walking the Chain Bridge over the River Tweed, from England to Scotland. We also walked the Hirsel Estate at Coldstream. Never short of things to do. We love to make use of the garden in the evening and enjoy the super views.

The Aitkens from Derbyshire (But hearts are rooted in Scotland!)

Wonderful few days at The Shiel, thank you. Northumberland is beautiful. We all enjoyed it so much and will recommend to all friends and family! We will certainly come again.

The Blands from Humberside

Thank you for the opportunity we had to stay at The Shiel. We very much appreciated your comfortable and extremely well-appointed accommodation. We had a most enjoyable few days and would love to return!

David & Janet from Edinburgh

First time in Northumberland – there will be a next time. Wonderful air, have slept so well, so quiet, tranquil and idyllic. From Lindisfarne to Amble, fabulous coastline, the stroll from Warenton Mill towards Bamburgh was excellent. In Belford there is a 3-mile walk to through plantation farm, glimpsed hares and yellowhammers. Superb stay, cottage top-quality.

Chris, Hilary, Tony & Christine from Lincolnshire

Fabulous relaxing weekend in beautiful surroundings. The Shiel is the perfect base and we looked forward to returning each evening – a real home away from home!

Gaynor, Emma, Jess, Abbie & Hannah from Carlisle

A nice and peaceful location, central to most things. The cottage is well-equipped and thank you for the welcome pack. We have enjoyed our stay.

Adrian, Lisa, Amy and Lewis from Nottingham

The Shiel perfect location amazing views and has everything you need. We would come back to this one for sure! An absolute gem.

Absolutely fabulous! Everything about our stay was wonderful. We loved the welcome basket the sentiment was lovely and thoughtful and a nice surprise. We will definitely book with you again!

Fabulous accommodation as always with Coquet Cottages. The Shiel was very well equipped and the welcome pack was lovely.

Lovely cottage, very clean and has great facilities. The area was lovely and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The welcome pack was really appreciated.

We have had a wonderful stay in this lovely cottage. Perfect location for exploring this fantastic area. We will definitely be making a return visit to this exceptional cottage.

We have had the most amazing New Year here at The Shiel. The cottage has been home from home in a peaceful location and easily accessible to wonderful beaches and beautiful countryside. We have promised our children a return visit – they too have fallen in love with Northumberland. A big thank you to Jon and Ruth.

Our second visit to The Shiel and every bit as good as the first. A superb cottage in a wonderful location. We will be returning!

We’ve had a great week at The Shiel. The weather has been kind so we’ve been able to do lots of walks locally and by the coast. What made it so good is the cottage itself which we feel is exceptional. We hope to return!

Lovely cottage: warm, cosy and very well equipped. Had a great time doing coastal walks and getting blown on the beaches. A very much needed and enjoyable short break. Thank you.

A well-appointed cottage, extremely well laid out. Enjoyed a comfortable week including several days of sunshine and clear blue skies. Good location.

Lovely cottage with everything you could possibly need. We’ve had a fantastic week exploring this beautiful part of the world. Our children have already asked when we can come back!

We have had the most glorious week in Northumberland. The weather has been wonderful, the cottage is just perfect – the view is wonderful. It’s got everything that we needed and we’ve been really comfortable. The welcome pack is great – thank you! We are very sad to leave but will be back soon!

Fabulous cottage, fabulous, will definitely be back this way.
One of the best cottages we’ve stayed in by far and we’ve stayed in quite a few. Attention to detail is unbelievable.

First class cottage. Everything we could possibly need and more from ice cubes in the freezer to the lovely welcome pack. Great attention to detail. Lovely location. Easy to get to anywhere on the Northumberland coast and Borders region. Would recommend this cottage to anyone.

Great cottage. We used it as a base for a golfing tour. Great courses around, + North Berwick (worth a visit). All of us enjoyed our stay with outstanding views and a wonderful night time sky.

What a lovely quiet location. Had a great relaxing week. Even made it to Edinburgh on the train from Berwick. We love this area, have visited many times, so we’ll be back.

Beautiful, well equipped cottage. Had a great family weekend!

Second visit – just as enjoyable as first! Very well equipped and comfortable.

What a lovely cottage! Just what we wanted – a wonderful relaxing weekend in beautiful Northumberland.

Another perfect ‘luxury’ cottage in the Coquet Cottages range. This is the fourth cottage we have booked through Coquet Cottages and The Shiel has proved to be every bit as good as the others. A warm, clean, cosy, comfortable cottage furnished, decorated and equipped to a very high standard.

We’ve enjoyed a beautiful and sunny week in Northumberland. The Shiel is a beautiful cottage, with everything you need to enjoy your stay in an idyllic and peaceful corner of the county. We have visited many places, but we would recommend Alnwick Garden and Holy Island. The beaches are particularly lovely and we hope to be back to enjoy them again.

A wonderful few days at The Shiel – a most comfortable and well-equipped holiday home. Would highly recommend. Thank you.

Our second great week at The Shiel after last year’s stay. Weather not so good when we arrived and gradually improved over the week to glorious sunshine today. It didn’t stop us enjoying visiting Bamburgh Castle, the Farne Islands, Alnwick Garden & Castle, Howick Hall & Gardens and Cragside. Today we walked the Coastal Path from Fenwick to Berwick upon Tweed – glorious! We’ll definitely be back again. A wonderful home-from-home!

A beautiful cottage with every extra effort appreciated. A lovely holiday in a beautiful and peaceful setting. Thank you

We enjoyed our 4 night stay in this beautiful cottage. The weather was against us but it didn’t stop us getting out & about, and made us appreciate the cosy cottage even more.

Wonderful cottage, which had everything we needed for a great holiday. Beautiful location and very peaceful. Great centre for exploration of Northumberland. We will certainly come again!

Superb cottage in a superb location. Plenty of lovely places to visit in a lovely county. Will certainly come back to visit other places we ran out of time to visit. Great holiday. Great week.

A well furnished and looked-after cottage which made us very comfortable and happy. Beautiful old buildings and great, peaceful surroundings. We even had a bit of time sitting out in the front, playing a game of boules, and not least seeing the swallows and wagtails and other birds out there. Thank you.

A beautiful cottage in an idyllic, peaceful setting. A home away from home. We felt comfortable straight away and relaxed into enjoying our holiday.

Our third visit to The Shiel and our eighth to Northumberland. A pleasure to visit our usual haunts – particularly the walk at Low Newton – both up to the Point and out to Newton’s pool.

Our second stay at The Shiel and another wonderful experience. Excellent accommodation! We love the beach at Bamburgh but also went into the National Park this year. Kielder is a long day trip but you could stay over. We flew owls and went to the Observatory. Stars on a clear night at The Shiel are amazing. . We loved seeing their hare, rabbit, house martins and wagtails in the garden. Thank you for a wonderful, peaceful break.

Our second visit, which makes its own point. The excellent views and a varied walk we recommend Belford to St Cuthbert’s Cave to Belford – about 8 miles but very easy gradients and much reward.

This cottage is the best we have ever stayed in – perfect location, perfect views, well-equipped and modern. All the little touches for me have made it that little bit more special Thank you so much for sharing your cottage with us – we have had an amazing, peaceful holiday!

Fabulous week! Fabulous cottage! We’ve been using The Shiel as a base for the last 6 days of walking St Oswald’s Way. We’ve all fallen in love with Northumberland – especially the coast. Seeing it all on foot was wonderful. We can thoroughly recommend the Running Fox in Felton for bread and cakes, the Lord Crewe Hotel in Bamburgh for crab sandwiches and the nearby ice cream parlour. We had lovely evening meals at the Percy Arms in Chatton and the Ship Inn at Low Newton by the Sea. We’ve also really enjoyed self-catering at the brilliantly equipped and very comfortable Shiel! Fantastic! We’ll be back!

We have stayed in many self-catering cottages over the years, but we feel that The Shiel is the best yet. The weather this week has been pretty good, only one really wet day.

A wonderful long weekend in Northumberland as part of a longer trip around the UK. The Shiel proved to be a beautiful base from which to visit the area, and we all had so much fun. A boat trip to the Farne Islands on Saturday was wonderful – even though we received a biblical drenching when the heavens opened. Sunday was spent on the beautiful beach at Low Newton, the sun breaking through in the afternoon and a wonderful end to the day at The Ship Inn. Highly recommended. As we head off now for the Lake District, our only regret is that we did not plan to stay in Northumberland longer, and spend a few extra days at the wonderful Shiel. Jon and Ruth, you have a special and rare place here!

A truly fabulous few days. The cottage is perfect and spotlessly clean. We all wish we could have spent more time at The Shiel, but sadly we are having to move on – we will remember our stay for years to come. So, thank you Ruth and Jon for making it possible.

This is our second time in The Shiel but our seventh visit to Northumberland. Now our daughter is about to turn 4, we managed to do some good walks around Craster, Low Newton and Dunstanburgh. We also tried Beadnell, the Ship Inn at Low Newton and went back to Bamburgh and Alnmouth beaches. The children love the cosy cottage and the garden – with our early morning hare visitor.

We had a lovely time in Northumberland. The cottage is cosy and well-equipped, and the children loved it. The welcome basket was much appreciated. We’ve been lucky enough to have a great week weather-wise, so have spent most of our time visiting the various beaches and rock pooling with the kids. We hope to be back soon.

We’ve had a fantastic week here, cottage superb, weather glorious. Such an amazing area to explore – beautiful walks, coast and country. We would recommend Linhope Spout waterfall. Also fantastic coastal walk from Craster to Low Newton by the Sea – taking in Dunstanburgh Castle along the way. Percy Arms – excellent food and hospitality. The Jolly Fisherman in Craster, super food with a view. We had fish and chips in Seahouses from Lewis’s fish restaurant, and they were excellent. We would very much like to return to this area, particularly to The Shiel.

This is our second stay in a Coquet cottage, and both have been excellent. The Shiel is well-equipped and peaceful, and very comfortable, a good base from which to explore this part of Northumberland. Fortunately, we have had good weather and have enjoyed the coastal scenery. Berwick-upon-Tweed completed our holiday and we enjoyed walking the walls. We rounded off our holiday with a delicious meal at the Percy Arms in Chatton. A great time – many thanks.

Another wonderful holiday in this area. Berwick upon Tweed was a new find and well worth a visit – great coastal walks. Walk around Holy Island, beyond the Beacon to the rocks the sightings of seals. Needless to say, the cottage is wonderful and added to the holiday.

Lovely cottage, very comfortable. Lots of great places to visit, and good walks. Northumberland did us proud with the weather! We’ll be back.

A very attractive cottage and a real pleasure to be able to cook meals in such a well-equipped kitchen! Thoughtfully and generously appointed. Thank you.

A rare break away from our farm and what a fabulous time we had! Beautiful cottage with everything required and more. Superb central location to enjoy the area. Looking forward to our next stay at The Shiel.

A lovely stay in the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed in. Superb location – lots of lovely places to visit and things to do. Lewis’s great for fish and chips in Seahouses and the Percy Arms hotel excellent the dinner. Very very comfortable cottage and lovely and warm. Many thanks.

An incredible spot, an immaculate, well thought out cottage, and some beautiful autumn sunshine… All makes for a fabulous few days away. We don’t want to leave! Well done on creating such a lovely home for people to enjoy. Every detail thought through. Brilliant.

We have had a lovely time in your beautiful cottage with amazing views – very sad to leave. The welcome pack was a real treat! Stopped off at the Cook and Barker Inn at Newton on the Moor on our way here – a friendly inn with really good food. Visited Alnwick Garden and Castle, Bamburgh Castle and beach with sand dunes, really lovely beach. Cragside House was amazing, definitely worth a visit. So many places to visit and things to see and do. Just not here long enough. This is our first visit to Northumberland so we will definitely be coming back very soon. The Shiel has been the perfect place for a lovely relaxing break.

What a beautifully organised cottage, there was absolutely nothing that we wanted and couldn’t find. We loved the flowers and basket of goodies to welcome us, and especially the view out of the kitchen window and the flowers in the pots (watered too!) – we could go on! Visited Alnwick Castle and Garden for Harry Potter Experience, beautiful gardens (children need to take a change of clothes as they will get wet!), Holy Island of Lindisfarne and watched the tide cross the causeway, Farne Islands with Billy Shields Boat Trips to see the amazing colonies of birds – fortunately the puffins were still there. Embleton Beach was the best. Lots of castles. A little further afield, Hadrian’s Wall the the Kielder Observatory for a 2 hour children’s session on how to launch a rocket! And last but not least, Edinburgh Tattoo as one of the family will probably not come this way again. Loved the Cheviot Hills and Border Country. So we are steeped in history and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Recommend the butchers in Bamburgh and the Smokery in Craster. Thank you.

Our very first holiday as a family with our son Noah. We’ve had a lovely time here in Northumberland, but above all a great stay in first class accommodation. Our every comfort has been thought of and provided, we couldn’t have asked for a better base from which to visit all that this lovely county has to offer – Bamburgh, Alnwick Castle and Garden, Seahouses, Cragside, Holy Island and Morpeth. A thoroughly good time was had by all.

Our very first holiday with our grandson Noah. The cottage itself is charming but what makes it so special are the wonderful finishing touches Ruth and Jon have included inside. A fabulous welcome pack, which was indeed very welcome. The baby toys, adult games, DVD’s and books cover all eventualities. The kitchen had absolutely everything we could possibly need. We visited Seahouses (great fish and chips), Bamburgh – beautiful beach and village, Alnwick Castle and Garden (wonderful). My favourite being Lindisfarne (Holy Island). It is such a shame we have to go home.

Had a lovely time at The Shiel. The house is very nice and welcoming, all your needs are catered for. The welcome basket was much appreciated. Fantastic location, ideally placed to explore all the wonderful countryside and coast. The White Swan at Warenford was excellent, food was great with a great selection. Thank you.

Sad to be coming to the end of the week in this wonderful cottage. Very impressed with everything and have enjoyed the lovely views all week as the weather has been good. We have used bikes and surfed with Boards and Bikes, who deliver to the door. The girls had a wonderful coastering experience with Action Adventure and we have enjoyed the beached at Bamburgh, Howick and Alnmouth. Also enjoyed a Puffin Cruise to Coquet Island. Eating out we liked The Castle in Bamburgh and sitting on the patio at The Blue Bell at Belford. Thank you so much.

Very pleased with our stay at The Shiel – an excellent choice for ‘Northumbria’, convenient for access to the coast and The Cheviots. We were most comfortable in the cottage – immaculately finished, careful attention to detail and thorough anticipation of any needs we might have – all of this in a charming setting. We feel relaxed and refreshed and hope to return to this beautiful place.

Fantastic stay, cottage was lovely. Would book again without hesitation. Everything was comfortable and cosy.

On arrival at the gate and taking in the wonderful views and then the aspect of the cottage and garden, we knew we had made an excellent choice. Once inside we were stunned by the style of the interior and have continued to be wholly impressed by the comfort and attention to detail. Thank you for the most welcome ‘welcome pack’. The last mile from the white cottage was a long one and it was great to be able to sit down with a cuppa and unwind. We have continued to enjoy the wonderful location of coast and country. The weather has been very kind and we have had a beautifully relaxing week. I gave the outdoor pots a good drink on Friday – they deserve if for being part of the lovely view.

It was perfect – best equipped cottage I’ve seen. Thoughtful touches for children and babies, lovely box of toys. Blackout curtains and nice cot. Comfortable sitting room with lovely sofas. The finish and decoration of the cottage was first class. Felt very luxurious which is great when going away with a baby. Lovely bedding. Lovely views. The kitchen was great and the cottage was very child friendly. This is the best cottage we’ve ever stayed in and your company is first rate. Great cottages, great booking service, great personal approach. We will definitely be using you again and most likely return to The Shiel. Love Northumberland and will do more holidays there.

Wow – what a place! The cottage is wonderful. This was our first little holiday away with our 6 month old son and this cottage couldn’t have been better. Set up SO well for families. Little touches like the box of toys is so thoughtful. The quality of the renovation is spectacular, the finish wonderful. sitting in the gorgeous kitchen, looking out at that great view is simply wonderful. So much thought has clearly gone into preparing this cottage – it is so well equipped, you seem to have thought of everything (especially in the kitchen). This is our first visit to Northumberland, an area we simply love, but this cottage is definitely the best we’ve stayed in. We are just sad we weren’t able to stay longer. Thanks, we hope to visit again.

A fabulous cottage! So well equipped and furnished, with a super view! We really appreciated the lovely welcome pack on our arrival – thank you. This has been our first visit to Northumberland and we’ve had a great time – hope to come back again! The Shiel is a great base for exploring the local area – lots to do. The Treehouse Restaurant and Alnwick Gardens were a highlight. Many thanks.

The location and the quality of the property are both stunning. The level of equipment and finish are ‘second to none’. Congratulations on what you’ve created and we’re sure you’ll get the rating you want. Recommend The Mizen Head, The Lord Crewer and The Castle (all in Bamburgh) for food.

Our first visit to this area, we couldn’t be more pleased with the cottage and the surrounding area. Weather was kind for us, we have had some lovely days exploring Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Craster. Great walks, great views. Had the best crab sandwich at the Castle Pub, Bamburgh and fish pie at The Jolly Fisherman in Craster. Congratulations, a truly lovely cottage, this made our first stay in Northumberland a very memorable one and we hope to return, thank you.

We’ve enjoyed an excellent stay at The Shiel, what a beautiful cottage! We used it as our base to explore the area and it has been perfect for our family of four. We’ve rented a few cottages but none come close to this for attention to detail and finishing touches – excellent. Thank you to Jon and Ruth, all in all a lovely stay. PS: The Lord Crewe Arms in Bamburgh and The Treehouse at Alnwick Gardens are both worth a visit.

We are your first guests from Mexico and this week in Northumberland has been fantastic! The Shiel was the most cosy and cute little cottage, provided us (three little ones included) with everything we needed. A great base from where to go and explore this beautiful area – we cannot say enough good things about our stay but THANK YOU!

The Shiel has failed to disappoint, it is a lovely addition to the Coquet Cottages list. We have been lucky to have had blue skies during our stay, although a little breezy at times. A very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Thank you once again!

It has been a pleasure to be the first guests in The Shiel. This outstanding cottage provides everything you could wish for and more. We have been regular visitors to Northumberland for almost 30 years but up to now have never appreciated the beauty of this particular area – even on misty, cool, March days there is an abundance of places to see. Thank you Jon and Ruth for your special touches – they were much appreciated. We hope to be back before long.

Our second visit to The Shiel and every bit as good as the first. A superb cottage in a wonderful location. We will be returning!

We’ve had a great week at The Shiel. The weather has been kind so we’ve been able to do lots of walks locally and by the coast. What made it so good is the cottage itself, which we feel is exceptional. We hope to return!

Lovely cottage – warm, cosy and very well equipped. Had a great time doing coastal walks and getting blown on the beaches. A very much needed and enjoyable break. Thank you.

A well appointed cottage and extremely well laid out. Enjoyed a comfortable week including several days of sunshine and clear blue skies. Good location!

Lovely cottage with everything you could possibly need. We’ve had a fantastic week exploring this beautiful part of the world. Our children have already asked when we can come back! Alnwick Castle is a must – the broomstick training is great, but tickets sell out quickly! Cragside is also fantastic. So much to see and do!

We have had the most glorious week in Northumberland. The weather has been wonderful. The cottage is just perfect and the view is wonderful. It’s got everything that we needed and we’ve been really comfortable. The welcome pack is great, thank you. We are very sad to leave but we we will be back soon!

Fabulous cottage. FABULOUS. Will definitely be back this way. One of the best cottage we’ve stayed in by far and we’ve stayed in quite a few. Attention to detail is unbelievable.
