Overview

Ambler’s Retreat in Amble is a deceptively spacious cottage decorated in calm, Laura Ashley-inspired interiors, with 4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and 1 shower room. It’s ideal for larger groups and families holidaying together as the location is so central within Amble fishing port that everything is on your doorstep. The cottage is very old so whilst it’s centrally located, it’s very quiet inside due to the thick stone exterior. Nearby you’ll find Warkworth village, just a mile and a half northwards up the Coquet Estuary. Here you’ll find Warkworth Castle and a 5-mile stretch of golden sandy beach, as well as a handful of dog-friendly pubs and quaint gift shops.

Ambler’s Retreat is perfect in the spring and summer as it’s so close to the harbour and the coast, but in the winter time, it proves to be just as cosy with a wood-burning stove, huge TV and ample dining space to all get together on an evening or for a hearty breakfast.

There is free Wi-Fi broadband access available throughout the cottage and up to three well-behaved pets are very welcome.

Map & Local Area

Ambler’s Retreat in Amble is situated just off the main high street of Amble, heading towards the Braid and the coast. The best feature of Ambler’s Retreat is how central you are within this vibrant fishing town and how much is on your doorstep. You could have an entire holiday without needing to get in the car.

Restaurants such as Rossini, La Famiglia Italian restaurant, The Old Boathouse award-winning fish restaurant, Sea and Soil, the rustic Fish Shack, and Indian restaurant Taj Mahal, are all within 5 minutes or less of the cottage – you’re completely spoiled for choice in dining out!

Amble is most well-known for its interesting working harbour and quirky weekend markets, as well as their delicious fish and chip shops on the harbour. You can walk to Warkworth easily in less than half an hour, where you’ll find a quaint street of pretty shops, cafes, and dog-friendly pubs, as well as the castle, leafy river walks, and of course, the beach.

Amble has a small beach called The Little Shore, which is no more than 10 minutes walk from the cottage. It’s dog friendly out of season, between the months of October and April. Alternatively, you can walk to Low Hauxley beach along the coast heading south and onto Druridge Bay, which is dog friendly all year round.

Wow!! What an amazing place. Beautifully decorated throughout in all my favourite Laura Ashley. Attention to detail throughout and amazingly equipped kitchen. Such a pleasure to stay in such a beautiful home. Thank you for all your hard work in making this such a delight for so many to enjoy. Our little Yorkie, Missie, loved her treats too. The welcome basket was a lovely thought. 5*. We will definitely come again and will recommend it to everyone!

Tips from a local

Pick up some fresh bread and other deli goodies from either La Famiglia or The Amble Butcher on the high street, pack a picnic, and head down towards the Braid, just a few minutes from Ambler’s Retreat. They have picnic benches there you’re on the coast, so you can see the boats going in and out of the marina.

You’re so close to the cottage and the main street that if you forget something or want more scrumptious treats, you’re almost just around the corner!

Tips from a local

Make sure you pay a visit to Druridge Bay Country Park which you can easily reach by car in 5 minutes or on foot which will take a bit longer.

Not only is it a pretty country park with a 100-acre lake fringed with woodland and meadows, but it also has a huge 7-mile stretch of golden sandy beach and several nature reserves tucked behind its dunes.

Druridge Bay is a hub of activity, hosting the national Park Run every Saturday, the annual VW Campervan Festival and the lake is home to many watersports activities all year round. If watersports are your thing, visit Northside Surf School, based in Amble.

Tips from a local

Hire some pedal bikes and explore the coastline from your doorstep.

As Amble is on the Northumberland Coastal Path, you can cycle as far as your legs will take you! Head south towards Druridge Bay and Cresswell (have a pit-stop at The Drift Cafe for a coffee and something sweet) or head north towards Warkworth and take the cycle path heading up to Alnmouth, admiring the Balamory-style houses as you tootle along.

You can even head further north towards Boulmer (a really pretty fishing village with a good pub) although you may want to get the bus back after that (or certainly after a pint).

Tips from a local

Overlooking the gorgeous Amble Harbour, you will find Matt Robson’s Artwork shop/gallery which is fairly new to Amble but is very popular with the locals.

There is beautiful handmade homeware available to purchase such as cushions, mugs, slate boards, and tumblers. Along with limited edition prints. Items from here would be perfect for a gift for family or friends or even a treat for yourself!

Tips from a local

Have a trip to Coquet Island searching for Puffins, sailing from Amble dock. The island is home to over 40,000 nesting sea birds such as Puffins, Roseate Terns, Sandwich Terns, Artic Terns, Kittiwakes, and Eider Ducks which all nest in the summer months. You may be lucky enough to see some grey seals, as the seals stay on the island all year round and can be seen on the east side of the island. The waters around the island are really clear and sometimes you can see dolphins!

Dave Grey’s boat trips are the best in the area and have been operating for the longest.

Owners of Ambler's Retreat

A Little Note from the Owners…

“One sunny weekend in the summer of 2016 we visited Amble for the first time and instantly fell in love with the village, the people, and the surrounding areas. The marina, the harbour, and the community spirit are the reasons Amble is our first holiday home venture. We had been visiting the Northumberland coastline for over ten years, but had never been to Amble, within two weeks of our first visit we had bought Ambler’s Retreat and so began the hard work!

Our home on North Street is our own little patch in beautiful Northumberland, when its time to go home we never want to leave, in the winter it is so warm and cosy with the wood burner and in the summer the sunsets from the master bedroom are absolutely gorgeous.

We are a family from Teesside; Mam, Dad, and three daughters who are now spread over Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. All of us would meet regularly to refurbish the house to its current state having a great time whilst doing so! Everyone hopes that you enjoy our home as much as we do – and add to its 200-year-old history through the memories you make while you’re here on holiday.”
