Tips from a local
Dickens was creatively named after the author Charles Dickens, partly due to its prime location in Alnwick just a short stroll to Barter Books, and partly because Wagonway House actually used to be an old work house – a key theme in many of Dickens’ novels!
Barter Books is perfect for a rainy day. You can browse through the book shelves, and are welcome to get comfortable on the sofas and armchairs around the shop. The building in converted from the old Alnwick Railway Station, and what used to be the waiting rooms is now an excellent little cafe with freshly made food and cosy open fires, making it a very popular place to pop in for lunch too.

A fun day out for the whole family – A visit to Alnwick Castle is an absolute must, especially if you have any Harry Potter fans coming with you! The castle was used when filming scenes in The Great Hall and for many of the external shots. There is a fun tour around the grounds and you can even join in for a broomstick flying lesson too!
The history of the castle is fascinating, and with members of the Percy family still residing in the castle, the rooms open to the public are beautifully preserved.
Tips from a local
Just 10 minutes’ drive from Alnwick, Alnmouth is a beautiful village with some gorgeous little shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and beer gardens, and a fantastic local art gallery. Take a stroll along the beach, or head up over the dunes for some breathtaking views along the coastline and out to sea. Though small in size with just 1 main street, you could easily fill a whole day taking in all Alnmouth has to offer.
Tips from a local
Head 20 minutes inland and visit Cragside House, Gardens and Estate. Looked after by National Trust, Cragside was the first residential home in the world to be lit with hydro-electricity. Nicknamed ‘ The Palace of the Modern Magician’ the house is beautifully presented and showcases some amazing inventions and gadgets. The gardens are stunning too with over 42 miles of footpaths to choose from across the whole estate, and there is a cafe, gift shop and excellent play area too.
