Recently refurbished to a beautiful standard, The Cookie Jar is a new restaurant, bar and hotel in the centre of Alnwick. Their Afternoon G&Tea is highly rated by locals and must be booked in advance.
The beautiful gardens are a relaxing retreat in the centre of the town and the experience is sure to be a real treat!

Barter Books in Alnwick is perfect for a rainy day! The building was an old Victorian train station and has been beautifully converted into the most fabulous bookstore, about 10 minutes’ walk from the cottage. Every book you can imagine is here, even some very valuable first additions on display. They have a lovely café converted from the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink.
As the name suggests, you can bring old books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits so you can buy something new (or old!) to take home. Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Dogs and snoozing welcome!
Tips from a local
Cragside is a must when staying in this area of Northumberland. Cragside was the first country house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power, pioneered by Lord Armstrong, a key figure in Northumberland. As well as the incredibly interesting and beautiful house, the whole estate is open to the public with its magnificent walks and country trails, as well as a huge children’s play park and a very nice café too.
It’s ran by the National Trust, click HERE to visit the website, and is about 15 minutes drive from Alnwick.

Owners of Dodds Nook
We asked the owners of Dodds Nook what drew them to the cottage:
‘The cottage has become a real home from home for us and we love how close it is to all of the shops and restaurants but still feels secluded and peaceful. The stunning coastline at Alnmouth is just a 10 minute drive away, and 10 minutes west you’re on the outskirts of the gorgeous Northumberland National Park – you really do have the best of both worlds within easy reach! For us, Dodds Nook is the perfect, cosy base for relaxing after a day of exploring this stunning county, and we hope our guests love the cottage and Alnwick town as much as we do.’
