Lovely cottage, lovely weather.  Lots of hares at the end of the lane and deer at the back of the cottage. We will be back. Housekeeper should get a medal for keeping the cottage looking so lovely. Going back to Fenwick Gallery in Warkworth – one of the top 3 galleries anywhere!

Tips from a local

Planning a pre-Christmas break to get you in the spirit?  Tie your holiday in with the Warkworth Christmas Shopping evening.  It generally happens on the last Friday in November, where most of the shops open in the village for late shopping with mince pies and bubbly.  The Christmas Fair in the beautiful 14th Century Church offers traditional games such as tombola and raffles and the Memorial Hall opens for local artists to offer unique Christmas gifts to take home. The pubs have the best atmosphere on this night, it’s a big event for the local community to get in the spirit of Christmas and for everyone to get a head start on their Christmas shopping!  If you are planning to dine out in the village that night, make sure you get booked up in advance.

Tips from a local

Find some interesting sea-critters in the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Head to the beach and take a left, heading north up the coast. Walk as far as you can and you will reach the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Seals have been spotted on these rocks many times, so you may be lucky but remember to keep dogs on a lead!  At the south end of the beach there’s a pier leading right out to sea with gorgeous views of Coquet Island and Amble fishing port.

Tips from a local

On dull days head up to Barter Books in Alnwick, an old Victorian train station converted into the most fabulous bookstore where you can trade in your unwanted books in exchange for a credit against new ones – great fun for all ages!  Every type of book you can imagine is here, everything from children’s books to rare valuable first additions on display. They have a lovely café housed in the station waiting rooms for a bite to eat whilst you browse the books.  Remember to bring your old books to exchange for new (or old) books.  Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Dogs and snoozing welcome!

Owners of Hare Cottage

We asked Nick and Irene, the owners, what made them fall in love with Hopping Hare Cottage:

“We fell in love with Northumberland, then we fell in love with the cottage, then we saw the hares – hence the name. We enjoy holidays up here with our son and dogs, and spend the time really enjoying the relaxation in the cottage and watching the wonderful wildlife. Spot the deer!”
