Map & Local Area

The village of Ellingham has the benefit of a superb Northumbrian gastro-pub called The Pack Horse Inn, which is just a few hundred yards walk easy stroll from the cottage. There are lovely walks from your front door, both around the pretty village or into the nearby countryside.

Your closest village is Beadnell, most well-known in Northumberland for it’s south-facing bay (the only one on the east coast), the water sports from the old harbour and the great atmosphere in the summer with both locals and tourists.

5 miles from Harebell House is Embleton village. A bit of a hidden gem along the Northumberland coastal route, Embleton has some fantastic pubs and restaurants such as The Grey’s Inn (with a fabulous beer garden to the rear) and The Dunstanburgh Arms. A walk past the village Golf Course takes you onto the award-winning white sand beach, with views of Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance. The beach runs right the way along to Newton by the Sea, where you’ll find The Ship Inn pub and restaurant, with its own brewery next door!

The beautiful coastal village of Bamburgh is just 6 miles from the cottage, where you will find a dramatically beautiful castle stood proudly on the headlands. Bamburgh is a vibrant little village, with an art gallery, gift shops, renowned butcher, delicatessen, grocers and greengrocer, several pubs, cafes and excellent restaurants – including the highly recommended Potted Lobster. There is also a very good museum dedicated to the local heroine Grace Darling and a very interesting Church.

Very clean, well presented property. It was also very well equipped. We liked the fact the welcome hamper had lots of local produce!

Tips from a local

Try something different and have a go at surfing at Embleton or Beadnell Beach! Northside Surf School offer individual and group lessons for all ages and abilities. Jon is a fully trained lifeguard and surfing coach, so you can enjoy making fun memories with your friends and family whilst learning how to ride the waves.

Tips from a local

Head to the Pack Horse Inn – just a 3 minute walk from Harebell House – for some hearty pub grub. This traditional country pub offers a specially prepared menu daily, offering tasty dishes with locally sourced produce. Whether you fancy and evening meal or one of their fantastic Sunday lunches, we highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tips from a local

Head up the A1 and visit Holy Island. Experience the serenity of Lindisfarne Priory, cut off from the world on the beautiful Holy Island, then explore Lindisfarne Castle to discover the interesting stories behind the 16th Century building. The castle is looked after by National Trust, and Lindisfarne Priory is owned by English Heritage, so remember to bring your cards with you if you are a membership holder.

We just ask you to be extra careful with checking your tide times for the causeway, and don’t underestimate how fast that tide comes in!

Tips from a local

The Farne Islands lie two to three miles off the Northumberland coast midway between the fishing village of Seahouses and the Castle of Bamburgh. There are between 15 and 20 islands depending on the state of the tide. From April until the end of July, these islands are dominated by one of the most exciting seabird colonies in the United Kingdom with unrivalled views of 23 species, including tens of thousands pairs of puffins, the sight is a joy to behold. The islands are also the permanent home for a large colony of Atlantic or Grey Seals and one of the top grey seal pupping sites in England. We would recommend taking a boat tour out to the Farne Islands with Billy Shiel’s boat trips. This is ‘a must’ when you come to Northumberland, especially as Harebell House is located so close to Seahouses. Make sure you book in advance as they are incredibly popular, especially after being featured on the much-loved TV series ‘Tales from Northumberland’ with Robson Green.

Tips from a local

Visit The Craster Arms in Beadnell only around a 10 minute drive from Harebell House. The bar is open all day everyday and is dog friendly which is a bonus! For the winter months real log fires are on offer for you and for summer weather in Northumberland a large outdoor seating area is the place to be! Do not miss out! In addition to the great cosy seating areas is a selection of pub food for lunch and dinner. And not forgetting Sunday lunches!

Fiona & Paul

Owners of Harebell House

We asked Fiona and Paul what they love about Harebell House:

“Harebell House is our ‘Happy Place’ for quality family time. We love the beautiful village surroundings and walks and that it is only minutes from fabulous beaches. We have been coming to this area for many years, as a good location for family spread between Scotland and England. Harebell is a Scottish equivalent of a bluebell, which fill the woods around Ellingham in late spring. One of our favourite places to visit is Beadnell Bay, where we often body and paddleboard. The water is usually crystal clear and the sands are immaculate. A winter favourite is a walk along Embleton Bay to Dunstanburgh Castle and on to Craster, followed by a hot chocolate on returning at Embleton golf club. Harebell House is loved by our whole family, with something to keep everyone happy. A place for us to relax, enjoy water sports, walking and cycling but above all recharge.

We hope you have a wonderful stay and enjoy Harebell House as much as we do!

Fiona, Paul, Katherine and Anna”
