Hassock House is situated in the peaceful Northumberland countryside, just a couple of miles from the coast at Embleton and Newton by the Sea, and 6 miles from lively Alnwick Market Town. This impressive building, converted from an old coaching inn (over 200 years old), is full of charm and character and has been beautifully refurbished throughout.
The cottage faces out onto the fields just over the quiet country road, and with a very large, lawned garden to the rear is the perfect base for a relaxing retreat with family or friends. With some great little pubs, restaurants and a village store in Embleton just 2 miles towards the coast, and a wider range of shops, supermarkets and cafes in Alnwick Market Town a 10 minute drive away, Hassock House ticks all the boxes for a tranquil holiday, with everything you could need close by. The pub ‘The Horseshoe Inn‘ in Rennington is a real hidden gem. About 1/2 mile away, it can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes (or 2 mins by car) for a cosy pub meal or evening drink in the very pretty beer garden.

Hassock House is located in the peaceful little hamlet of Stamford, just 2 miles from the stunning beaches and excellent pubs and restaurants at Newton by the Sea and Embleton. Your just far away enough to enjoy the peaceful, picturesque countryside, but have everything you could need a few minutes’ away.
Hassock House sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms: 2 kingsize bedrooms, a twin room with 2 full-size single beds, and a twin room with 2 twin single beds that can be converted to a superking bed on request. There are two en suite shower rooms, one family bathroom and an additional ground floor WC.
This spacious family cottage benefits from 2 living areas: the main family room, and a large yet cosy snug room. The kitchen is again very spacious with additional seating, making this a very sociable and practical cottage for families and friends to comfortably gather together, or spread out around the house as you wish.
The large, enclosed garden at the rear of the house is rather spectacular! With a large grass lawn, numerous patio areas, multiple seating options, outdoor lighting, a summer house, and a children’s climbing frame there is something for the whole family here.
There is private, off-road parking for 2 cars (or 3 small cars) on the driveway to the side of the house. Two dogs are very welcome and there is free unlimited Wi-Fi as standard.
The driveway is to the side of the house and upon arrival, access through the side gate will take you into the rear garden, where you can enter the house from the back door into the boot room. During the holiday, guests have access to both the front and back doors.
The front of the cottage is south-east facing and is very pretty, looking out onto the fields opposite. The front door of the cottage leads into a bright porch, containing a shoe rack, hanging hooks and shelf.
The inner door from the porch takes you straight into the snug room. The stunning exposed stone and wooden beam inglenook, housing a real wood burning stove makes this room very cosy and welcoming. The room contains two 3-seater sofas and a leather armchair with a foot stool. There is a Smart TV with Netflix account provided for guest use. The large south-east facing window allows ample light to flow in, and are beautifully dressed with blinds and curtains. The snug room also has access to the handy under-stairs cupboard where you’ll find the hoover, ironing board and clothes airer.
The main lounge is also at the front of the house with large windows over looking the fields across the road. The room contains a very large corner sofa, comfortably seating 6 guests, and 2 high-back armchairs and a coffee table. There is a Smart TV with Netflix account provided, and a DVD player. In the cabinet, you’ll find an assortment of DVDs, books and board games provided.
The kitchen at Hassock House is very large, almost the full width of the house. The room contains am American-style fridge/freezer with ice making compartment, large electric range oven, ceramic induction hob, Belfast sink, integrated dishwasher, microwave, toaster, multi-temperature kettle, electric hand whisk, Lakeland coffee and hot chocolate machine (compatible with most pods including Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Mars and Galaxy).
The dining area contains a large table with 8 chairs. There is also additional soft seating, with a 3 seater sofa in the corner of the room, a Smart TV with Netflix account provided and a portable Bluetooth speaker.
Patio doors lead from the dining kitchen straight out into the back garden.
The cloakroom WC contains a wash basin, mirror and toilet.
At the back of the house, the boot room has a door to the garden and is very handy for returning to the cottage after a walk on the beach. The boot room contains a boot tray, coat hooks and hanging shelf. There is also a dog crate stored in here should guests require one.
The boot room contains the utility facilities for the house: an under bench washer/ dryer, full size sink, iron and storage cupboards for cleaning products. The boot room also houses the oil central heating boiler.
On the first floor you will find all 4 bedrooms, 2 en-suite shower rooms and the family bathroom.
Main Bedroom, ‘Low Newton’
At the front of the house, the main bedroom is very impressive! With 5 windows and a quirky alcove, this room offers triple aspect views looking across the fields opposite and beyond. The room contains a kingsize bed, 2 bedside tables, double wardrobe, chest of drawers with a mirror, and a rocking chair. This room also benefits from a Smart TV, with Netflix account provided. Blackout blinds and all windows. Hair dyer provided.
The en-suite to the main bedroom has a large double shower, toilet, wash basin with ample storage, a mirror above and a shaver point. Complimentary toiletries by Notes of Northumberland.
Second Bedroom, ‘The Cheviots’
Again at the front of the house with 1 window and gorgeous countryside views, the second bedroom is a great size too. It contains a king size bed, 2 bedside tables, double wardrobe, chest of drawers with a mirror and a Smart TV (Netflix provided). Blackout blinds at both windows. Hair dyer provided.
The en-suite to the second bedroom again has a large double shower, toilet, free-standing wash basin with a glass shelf and a mirror above. Complimentary toiletries by Notes of Northumberland.
Bedroom 3 – Twin Single Beds/ Superking Bed – ‘Bamburgh’
Located at the back of the house, bedroom 3 is still a good size, and has 2 low windows overlooking the stunning rear garden. The room contains 2 full size single beds (3 ft wide) that can be converted into a superking bed (6 ft wide) upon request when booking. The room has 2 bedside tables, stylish wooden hanging rail, drawer storage, dressing table and chair, and a hair dryer provided.
Bedroom 4 – Twin Single Beds – ‘Craster’
Next door to bedroom 3, this room has 2 windows looking out over the back garden and has 2 full size single beds (3 foot wide), a hanging rail, drawer storage, dressing table and chair. Hair dryer provided.
The family bathroom contains a shower over the bath, storage unit with plenty of cupboards, a built-in wash basin and mirror above. Small frosted window with privacy blind. Complimentary toiletries by Notes of Northumberland.
The enclosed rear garden is absolutely beautiful and very large – one of the most impressive features of Hassock House. The back door from the boot room and patio doors from the kitchen lead out onto a pretty, paved patio area, with 2 chairs and a table. Over the large lawn, there is a summer house with a sofa inside, and another patio area with an outdoor dining table and chairs for 8 guests. Under the pretty wooden pergola, there is outdoor sofa seating and a coffee table too. Guests are welcome to bring chairs over from other seating areas if needed of course. There is a BBQ provided for guest use (type TBC) on the patio areas only to protect the grass.
The children’s climbing frame has a slide, climbing wall, telescope and small table and chairs for children. Lockable storage is available in the garden shed for bikes, surfboards, and any other sporting equipment you may want to bring with you.
The front garden is fully gravelled, and contains some pretty potted plants and shrubs.
Hassock House has parking for 2 cars (or 3 small cars) on the private drive to the side of the house.

Hassock House is in a prime location, just 2 miles from the stunning coastline at Embleton and Newton-by-the-Sea, and 6 miles from historic Alnwick Market Town.
Embleton is a gorgeous village with a beautiful sandy beach, as well as a choice of 3 pubs (The Grey’s Inn, The Blue Bell Inn, and The Dunstanburgh Castle Inn), 2 restaurants and a local convenience store too. The beaches here are very popular with water-sports enthusiasts, and there is also a scenic golf course by the dunes.
A further couple of miles along the road is Newton by the Sea with another gorgeous beach and view of Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance. The pub and restaurants The Joiner’s Arms is a must-visit for lunch or an evening meal, and The Ship Inn at Low Newton is very quirky, with outdoor seating on the beautiful green by the beach, and its own brewery next door.
There are numerous other gorgeous little villages peppered along our beautiful Northumbrian coastline within easy reach of Hassock House by car along the coastal route such as Craster, Beadnell, Seahouses and Bamburgh.
Historic Alnwick Market Town, where you’ll find quaint cobbled streets, interesting shops, cafes and restaurants and the famous ‘Barter Books’, Alnwick Castle, (used as the setting for Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter movies) and the world-class Alnwick Garden and magnificent Treehouse Restaurant, can be reached in just 10 minutes by car.

Tips from a local
Head to The Horseshoes Inn in Rennington for some hearty pub grub. Just 10 minutes’ walk along the public footpath leading through the fields from Hassock House, The Horseshoes Inn has a gorgeous beer garden in the summer and cosy log burners inside for the cooler winter months. There is parking available next to the pub (just 2 minutes from the cottage by car) and dogs are welcome in the beer garden.
Tips from a local
Visit Alnwick Castle and Gardens. Just 10 minutes’ drive from Hassock House, Alnwick Castle is very impressive, made world famous for its use in Downton Abbey and of course Harry Potter. The history of the castle is fascinating, and as it is still lived in periodically through the year by the Percy family, the rooms open to the public are beautifully retained. The Alnwick Gardens are a must-see too with its gorgeous walks, stunning fountain and fascinating ‘Poison Garden’.

Take a stroll along the stunning beach between Newton by the Sea and Embleton. The view of Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance is absolutely gorgeous. The Square at Low Newton is lovely too, with the quirky pub The Ship Inn nestled in the corner – with its own brewery next door.

We asked the owners of Hassock House to share their favourite things about the cottage:
“After visiting Northumberland on several occasions through Coquet Cottages we decided to bite the bullet and buy our very own little piece of paradise. We were lucky enough to find Hassock House, part of an old coaching inn over 200 years old. The property and its neighbour were converted to housing in 2015.
The location is just perfect, 5 minutes drive to south west takes you to Alnwick – full of character with artisan shops ands fabulous architecture, and 5 minutes to the east we can be on the beach at Embleton and Newton-by-the Sea walking our dogs. Our favourite walk is from Low Newton heading towards Dunstanburgh Castle, often calling at The Ship Inn on our way back.
There are so many amazing restaurants and pubs; we’ve not had a bad meal yet! We have a pub (The Horseshoe Inn at Rennington) just across the field and love watching the sheep in the fields around us from the cottage. Even in the depths of winter the whole coastline is truly spectacular.
