Head to the beach!
Just 10 minutes in the car and you’re on Bamburgh Beach – one of the UK’s favourite stretches of coastline. The golden sand, rolling dunes and of course Bamburgh Castle impressively nestled on the headlands, towering over the beach and village make for a very memorable day out.
Pack your picnic, grab your beach towel – and of course your camera – and enjoy a relaxing day by the sea.

Head into Alnwick to explore some of the hidden gems of the historic market town.
Barter Books world-famous second hand book store is perfect for a rainy day. Just 10 minutes’ drive south on the A1 from Highfield House, this beautiful building is converted from the old train station of the town, and is a real quirky find. You’re welcome to cosy up next to the roaring fire with a book, and we highly recommend grabbing lunch at the excellent cafe, in what used to be the station waiting rooms!

Visit Berwick! This beautiful, coastal town has four sandy beaches and stunning riverside walks. Berwick is perfectly situated for a relaxing day out and a haven for walkers and cyclists.
Berwick’s great Elizabethan walls were built to keep invading Scots from entering the town, and are certainly worth a visit during your stay. Walk the complete circuit, taking in spectacular views across the River Tweed estuary and Berwick’s three bridges, including the iconic Royal Border Bridge, built by Robert Stevenson and one of the finest bridges of its kind in the world.
Explore Berwick’s history by visiting museums in Berwick Barracks and The Main Guard. Take a tour of the town’s old courtroom, jail lockups and notorious ‘drunk’s cell’ in the upper floors of Berwick Town Hall. Families can also enjoy a splash-park, soft play, creative pottery centre and the swimming pool and leisure centre, as well as kids holiday activities in Berwick Museum and Berwick Parks!
Tips from a local
Explore Chillingham Castle and Walled Garden, just 6 miles from Wooler. The impressively preserved 12th Century castle is full of history, and the friendly room guides make your visit extra special with tales to tell about every room if you wish them to. The castle has a pretty grizzly past, so if you’re feeling brave enough, why not try one of the night time ghost tours to experience the castle and grounds after dark!
