Map & Local Area

Known as ‘The Gateway to the Cheviots’, Wooler is the perfect base for a picturesque country getaway.

This pretty town has plenty to offer, with superb cafes, restaurants, pubs and quaint shops on the main street, just a short stroll from Honeypot House. The locals are very friendly, and although it is small, Wooler has a plethora of activities and events nearby to partake in during your stay. The Farmer’s Market is held on one Sunday of every month from April through to October, with a special Christmas Market held at the beginning of December. The nearby Glendale show on August Bank Holiday Monday is always a huge success with both locals and visitors from far and wide, and Wooler even hosts its own annual ‘Glendale Music Festival’ on the 3rd weekend of July.

The surrounding area has you spoiled for choice, with Harthorpe Valley (commonly known as Langleeford), Ingram Valley, and Linhope Spout offering breath-taking walks towards the impressive Cheviot Hills, starting just a couple of miles from Wooler. Just 6 miles away, nestled on the Northumbrian Moors is eerie Chillingham Castle and Grounds, and the rare Wild Cattle of Chillingham.

If you’re heading to the coast, a 25 minute drive takes you to BamburghBeadnell and Seahouses, or for a full day out, the border town of Berwick (25 minutes North) has 2 gorgeous beaches, providing both coastal and country river walks with yet more lovely cafes and amenities to try out.

Tips from a local

Book a table at the lovely Milan Restaurant. Set in the heart of Wooler, this family-run Italian restaurant offers quality food with a fantastic menu and friendly staff who help make your experience as enjoyable as possible. We recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you fancy a night in your holiday home, you can also order take-away!

Tips from a local

Spend a day at the ancient fortress that is Chillingham Castle, just a 12 minute drive from Wooler. The castle has many interesting rooms such as the Torture Chamber, complete with executioners’ blocks, and a dungeon which was used for imprisonment. There are diaries and accounts scratched on the walls and a ‘drop’ in the floor, leading to deeper chambers.

Built in the 12th Century, this spooky castle has a grizzly past, so if you’re feeling brave, we recommend booking one of the night time ghost tours!

Tips from a local

Known as the most northerly known steam railway in England, Heatherslaw Light Railway is a 15” gauge railway running along the banks of the River Till between Heatherslaw Station and Etal Castle. The return journey is a total of 4 miles, but you can stop at Etal Station before returning, giving you the opportunity to explore Etal Castle or pretty Etal Village.

The views of the countryside are stunning, and you can spot some of the local wildlife along the way.

Tips from a local

The capital of Scotland is so easy to reach from Wooler – you are on the Borders! The nearest train station is Berwick (around 20 minutes drive away) and once on the train, it’s an easy 45 minute journey up to the capital where you’ll land right in the centre of the city at Edinburgh Waverley station. Break up your holiday and hang up your walking boots with a city break – the Christmas markets are legendary!

Tips from a local

Enjoy breakfast or a light lunch at The Milk Bar, just down the road from Honeypot House. Owned and ran by Doddington Dairy (most famous for their ice cream!) this cute little parlour serves a great breakfast if you’re looking for a break from the kitchen one morning!
