Try dining at The Warkworth House Hotel in their ‘Number 16’ bistro. The restaurant caters well for vegetarians and has a good range of local produce. On weekends we would suggest booking in advance.

On Wednesday’s and Sunday’s you can tip the ferryman to take you over the River Coquet to discover an ancient, hidden Hermitage, carved from a rock face and home to a hermit with a fascinating yet tragic past. Find out more about the history of The Hermitage.

Warkworth Castle is such a well-preserved and truly impressive Norman castle that a stay in the area isn’t complete without exploring this amazing place. Even if you wouldn’t normally, take up the audio tour, it really brings the castle to life! Great for all ages, even the little ones as it’s great for them to run around the grassy grounds with a pretend sword in hand!

Overlooking the gorgeous Amble Harbour, you will find Matt Robson’s Artwork shop/gallery which is fairly new to Amble but is very popular with the locals. There is beautiful handmade homeware available to purchase such as cushions, mugs, slate boards, and tumblers. Along with limited edition prints. Items from here would be perfect for a gift for family or friends or even a treat for yourself!

A fabulous contemporary cafe created from the conversion of an old pub, Bertram’s is incredibly popular at all times of the day and is open 7 days a week. Serving fabulous food with everything from traditional Northumbrian fare such as kipper pate through to more contemporary dishes such as eggs benedict as well as the best afternoon teas in the area. Bertram’s is perfect for a coffee or home made cullen skink soup after a long walk on the beach, or even an early evening meal with little ones. It’s licensed too if you fancied something stronger than a coffee!
Julie and Mark Ringland
We asked Julie and Mark about the history of Hotspur Cottage and how they came to letting it out as a holiday home:
“Hotspur Cottage was my father’s home, so it holds many memories for us. My father chose to live there because of its fantastic location in the prettiest village in all of Northumberland and loved being so close to both the countryside and its abundance of nature, but also close to the sea, as he sailed.
Today, it makes the perfect luxury bolthole for a couple looking to enjoy village life as well as being in a great spot for exploring further afield. The walks along the riverside are just magical, and the beach is just the perfect place for blowing away those cobwebs and seeing just what really matters in life!”
