I would class our family as professional cottage dwellers. We have stayed all over Northumberland with Coquet Cottages. This cottage was booked as a last minute break and what an absolute gem we have found. Great welcome pack, exquisite furnishings, every gadget for the kitchen, very clean and comfortable. The proximity to The Cook and Barker is priceless and great beaches a short drive away.

Tips from a local
Dine at the very popular Cook and Barker Inn Pub and Restaurant. Just a short walk from the cottage, the Cook and Barker has a lovely, welcoming atmosphere and the hearty pub grub is perfect for a casual lunch in the bar or an evening dinner in the restaurant area. The pub even has a dog friendly lounge. This isn’t always open, but if you call in advance or pop your head in to let them know you’ll be dining with your pooches, they can open this up for you no trouble at all.
Tips from a local
Head into the pretty market town of Morpeth just 15 minutes drive down the A1, where you will find lots of boutique shops as well as the award winning Sanderson Arcade. Carlisle Park is a gorgeous, well-maintained country park right in the centre of the town and makes a lovely day out with a picnic – plus you can take the dog too!
Tips from a local
Head to the coast and enjoy a picnic at Druridge Bay Country Park and spend the day strolling along the beach and enjoying the lovely countryside. The park is centered on a lake with surrounding meadows with woods that has been restored from an old opencast coal mine, maturing beautifully into a pleasant landscape for walks and picnics. They also have water sports, a cycle path and if you have any of your own watersports equipment you can use it on the lake. There are toilets and a café too, as well as a little gift shop which is open most weekends and gift shops. There is a charge to park so take some change. Druridge Bay is 15 minutes’ drive in the car. The best bit – dogs are welcome all year round too!
Jean and Colm
Owners of Kirkstone Cottage
We asked Jean and Colm what made them fall in love with Kirkstone Cottage:
“We discovered the stunning beauty of Northumberland whilst on holiday a couple of years ago, and then fell in love with Kirkstone Cottage whilst we were staying in the attractive little village of Newton on the Moor.
The location is great, situated between the beautiful heritage coastline and the glorious countryside of the interior, whilst Alnwick and all its attractions are only a 10 minute drive away. An added bonus is that we are in walking distance of a fantastic gastropub, the Cook and Barker, which is a perfect retreat after a day’s sightseeing.
In the summer we enjoy a BBQ in our pretty garden, which is peaceful and quiet. The cottage is a fusion of old and new; once the village chapel, it has some fine arched windows and old stonework. The later extension provides a spacious modern interior, which is kept cosy by the log burner in wintertime. So we hope you enjoy staying here as much as we do, our dogs, Cody and Pearl love it too!”
