At The Ship Inn you can enjoy a pint of real ale from their own micro-brewery and a famous crab sandwich, perfect to enjoy while you watch the ever changing seascape beyond the golden sandy beach.

Tips from a local

Call at The Ship Inn for a local brew! From Low Tide you’re just minutes away from one of the most beautiful stretches of sandy bay on the East Coast. The walk (heading south) will take you along the bay from Newton by the Sea, providing breathtaking views of Dunstanburgh Castle on the headland in the distance.

When you reach The Square at Low Newton by the Sea, The Ship Inn Pub and Restaurant nestled in the corner has its own micro-brewery next door, with fantastic local ales to sample alongside their legendary locally-caught crab sandwiches.

Tips from a local

Grab a pint of local ale and sample the local seafood at The Joiner’s Arms in Newton by the Sea. This incredibly popular gastro pub is located a short drive from Low Tide and serves great quality food which is locally sourced. With indoor and outdoor seating available, this pub is perfect for a drink or meal out in any season.

Tips from a local

Take a boat tour out to the Farne Islands with Billy Shiel’s boat trips. This is a must-do when you come to Northumberland, especially as you’re so close to Seahouses.

The tours leave from Seahouses harbour and sail all around the Farne Islands. Some stop at the islands where you can get off the boat and enjoy a tour hosted by one of the local rangers.  Each boat tour differs depending on the season and what animals and birds are nesting/breeding around the island.

Billy Shiel’s tours are the largest and most long-established operator in the town, still ran by all the members of the Shiel family who are the most knowledgeable about the area. Make sure you book in advance as they are incredibly popular, especially after being featured on the popular TV series with Robson Green’s ‘Tales from Northumberland’!

Tips from a local

Located less than a 10 minute drive away from Newton by the Sea, Doxford Hall & Spa is a beautiful hotel converted from a stately home and worth visiting for afternoon tea or a spa day. Book a relaxing spa day and unwind with a luxury facial or massage to really feel that you’ve rejuvenated on your holiday.

Finish your day off indulging in a delicious afternoon tea in either the magnificent library or morning room in front of the roaring fire. The afternoon tea includes freshly baked sweet treats, a selection of traditional sandwiches, tea and coffee or why not treat yourself to a glass of bubbly.

Tips from a local

If the weather is somewhat inclement, head to Barter Books in Alnwick. Housed in the grand Victorian train station, the building is incredibly well preserved and gives a taste of it’s grand past.  With a vast selection of second-hand books, with everything from valuable first editions to popular childrens books, this is such a welcoming place to visit.

You’ll have to tear yourself away after settling down in a cosy armchair with an engrossing book in front of their roaring fire!  Every book you can imagine is here, of all genres and for all ages, even some very valuable first additions are on display. They have a lovely café housed in the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink and you’re welcome to take a book in there to look through whilst you enjoy a coffee.

You can bring your own books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits which you can use to buy something new (or old!) to take home.  Children, dogs and snoozing welcome!

Nova and John Wykes

Owners of Low Tide

We asked Nova and John what they love about Low Tide:

“We searched for a property for two years before finding our ideal cottage. The moment we viewed it we knew “Low Tide” ticked all the boxes and more. It’s cosy yet spacious with room for all the family to spread out and have their own space. Each bedroom has it’s own bathroom. The views from the new sun room over the fields to the sea and Beadnell in the distance are fabulous. There are many different walks and places to visit close by with the beach at Newton Point only a mile or so away.

Driving North on the A1 a holiday can start with a visit to The Running Fox in Felton – very close to the A1. There you can stock up on homemade cakes, quiches etc. Or from the North at Brownieside on the A1 stop at Carnaby’s for amazing take out salads, quiches and cakes. Family favourite outings are to Holy Island, The Farne Islands and Alnwick (Harry Potter’s!) Castle.”
