The aptly-named, gorgeous North Star apartment in Alnwick is just as special as it sounds. Set within the prestigious renovated apartments in the Maltings building in the very centre of Alnwick, North Star is fantastically located for exploring Northumberland’s central hub all on foot, including Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Alnwick Treehouse and Barter Books, which are all within 15 minutes; easy stroll from your front door.
This stylish yet cosy apartment is rated 5 stars with a prestigious GOLD award – the best rating achievable. It sleeps up to 4 guests in 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms, giving each couple adequate space and allowing a family to spread out. North Star might be located in an ancient market town but it’s full of all the latest technology so you can stay well-connected during your holiday. Smart TV’s are in both bedrooms and the lounge with access to Netflix, and a Bose Bluetooth speaker is provided for use too. Free Wi-Fi included as standard. 2 small dogs or 1 medium-size dog welcome.
The largest of our apartments in the Maltings, North Star apartment sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms; 1 king size room and 1 twin bedroom that can be converted into a super king-size upon request. This makes it a perfect apartment for couples on their own, 2 couples holidaying together or a young family, with more than enough room to spread out. The kitchen, dining area and lounge are open plan, with a view out to Pottergate Tower.
The apartment is north facing (hence the name!) and the living space is very complimentary to the size of the apartment. 2 bathrooms make it easier to holiday as a group as each couple has their own space. Bathrobes are available too upon request.
2 small dogs are very welcome here, or just 1 medium-size dog. Children are welcome too and we can provide a travel cot and a highchair upon request. Free WiFi is throughout the apartment and there’s private parking space for 1 car.
The entrance into the apartment building is easy to find and opposite the main entrance to the rest of the building. North Star apartment is on the first floor and you can choose the lift or the stairs to get there. All the access is completely level from car to door, and once you’ve reached the apartment, entrance is into the hallway.
Open Plan Living Space – Kitchen
Leading straight from the hallway you’ll arriving into the gorgeous open-plan living space. The kitchen is very well equipped and contains the usual appliances and accessories such as an under-bench fridge and freezer, electric oven and ceramic hob, kettle, toaster, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, Nespresso coffee machine (with an initial supply of pods) and cafetiere to enjoy fresh coffee. There’s also a breakfast bar with 2 stools for informal dining.
The dining table seats four but can extend larger for big family meals! In addition to the dining table is the breakfast bar with two stools, just off the kitchen.
The lounge has a 4 seater and a 3 seater sofa, so there’ll be no arguments about space! The Smart TV has full access to Netflix and there’s a portable Bose Bluetooth speaker too so you can enjoy your own music around the apartment. The speaker must not be removed from the apartment for obvious reasons.
Master Bedroom with en suite
The master bedroom has a Juliette balcony facing out to the front entrance of the building and a king size bed (5ft wide), super-comfy mattress and lots of storage space. The bedding is all non-feather, luxury linens and fluffy towels and a hair dryer is also provided. The en suite has a shower with a rainfall shower head, WC, wash hand basin and heated towel rail. Complimentary toiletries by Noble Isle. Whilst the shower is spacious, it has a step up to the tray of about 20cm.
Twin/Super king Bedroom
The twin bedroom is spacious with enough storage space for whilst on holiday. The twin single beds (3ft wide) can convert into a super king size (6ft wide), upon request. All bedding is non-feather. Luxury linens, fluffy towels and a hair dryer are provided.
The bright and fully-tiled bathroom has a rainfall shower over the bath, wash basin, sink and heated towel rail. Complimentary toiletries are provided by Noble Isle.
At North Star apartment there is 1 parking space in a garage underneath the building. Additional cars would need to be parked somewhere local. There is lots of parking in Alnwick town using a ‘disc’ system, which is all free of charge.

There is private parking space for one car in an allocated bay in the garage underneath the building. Additional, on-street parking can be found very close-by. There are no ‘guest’ spaces in the apartment parking area.
Whilst there is no outside space at North Star, both the lounge and the master bedroom has a Juliette balcony. There are lovely walks in and around Alnwick Castle to enjoy on foot too from the apartment.

There are bike racks available in the car park area, shared with all residents of the apartment building. These are on a first-come-first-served basis and you will need to bring your own lock to keep it secure.
With all accommodation on one level and level access from the front door, this apartment is well suited to those with limited mobility, and lift access is available. Please note that in the family bathroom the shower is over the bath and in the en suite whilst there is a stand-alone shower, there is a significant step of around 20cm up to the shower tray.
North Star apartment is in a central location with all the amenities of Alnwick town on your doorstep, including magnificent Alnwick Castle and the world-famous Alnwick Garden. The stunningly beautiful Heritage coastline is just around 10 minutes drive away, and the necklace of pretty coastal villages strung along the Heritage coastline are crying out to be explored, from Amble in the south up to Bamburgh in the north. A drive across the causeway to Holy Island is not to be missed, and a boat trip to the nature reserves of the Farne Islands are unmissable too. Inland The Cheviot Hills and Coquet Valley provide fantastic walking and cycling opportunities and grand country houses such as Cragside, Wallington Hall and Howick Hall provide historical and gardening interest.

Care of the Property
Our ‘Coquet’ cottages are much-loved privately-owned holiday homes into which our owners have lavished much care and investment to create beautiful places for their guests to enjoy. We therefore require a cautionary Good Housekeeping Deposit to protect our owners’ property, so that if damage/breakages occur or exceptional cleaning over and above the usual changeover clean is required up to the value of the deposit, the owner can be recompensed.
At North Star apartment, you have the option of paying either a £150 refundable Good Housekeeping Deposit or a smaller non-refundable £24 Deposit Waiver, which covers you to the value of £150. Please choose which option you prefer when booking. Click HERE for more information.

Map & Local Area
North Star is located within the newly-refurbished Maltings buildings right in the very heart of the medieval town of Alnwick. Formerly a local brewery that became dilapidated, the building has been completed renovated to comprise of 37 luxury apartments that mix new contemporary design with original listed features.
North Star is incredibly well situated for exploring the town, eating out and going for walks, all without having to get in the car. You can reach Alnwick Gardens and Castle on foot, as well as the famous Treehouse. The closest entrance to Alnwick Castle is just 5 minutes walk away on Bailiffgate, but for the Treehouse it will take around 15-20 minutes on foot, but it’s an easy walk through the town. You can also discover the famous Barter Books in the centre of the town, which is no more than 10 minutes walk away from North Star – this is a must in the cooler months to relax by the fire with a cuppa and a good book – dogs welcome too! There’s lots of little shops, independent cafes and restaurants, as well as some great pubs around the town too. Twice a week, the market place has a farmer’s market.
Hulne Park is less than 10 minutes walk away from the apartment, which has many routes to take. This fabulous park is part of the Alnwick Castle estate and has so many different routes to choose from. You can walk from 1 mile to 10 miles if you wish! Unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed in Hulne Park.
The nearest beach to North Star is just 10 minutes’ drive in the car at Alnmouth, where you can park right on the beach and walk the length of the entire coast at Alnmouth, around 7 miles in total.

Tips from a local
Barter Books in Alnwick; the old Victorian train station converted into the most fabulous bookstore, is just about 10 minutes’ walk from the apartment. Every book you can possibly imagine is here, even some very valuable first additions on display. They have a lovely café converted from the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink. As the name suggests, you can bring old books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits so you can buy something new (or old!) to take home. Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Dogs are welcome and we guarantee an afternoon snooze in front of the fire!
Tips from a local
Cragside is a must when staying in this area of Northumberland. Cragside was the first country house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power by Lord Armstrong, a key figure in Northumberland. As well as the interesting house, the whole estate is open to the public with its magnificent walks and country trails, as well as a huge children’s play park and a nice café too.
It is ran by the National Trust, click HERE to visit the website and it’s about 15 minutes drive from Alnwick. Dogs are welcome in the grounds, but not in the house.

Treat yourself to an Afternoon Tea at The Cookie Jar in Alnwick. Dine within the stunning, historic building of the former Convent of Mercy, in the cosy and stylish bistro. There is a full menu option, but the Afternoon Tea in particular is divine and very reasonably priced too! The Cookie Jar has a real luxurious feel throughout, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.

The attraction tickets allow entry for a full year, so it’s a great excuse to visit Northumberland again! Make sure you book up in advance at The Treehouse to avoid disappointment as it is very popular.

Head to the coast and enjoy a day at Alnmouth, just 10 minutes’ drive from the apartment.
This gorgeous, historic village is full of character, with beautiful buildings and of course a breath-taking view over the dunes, sandy beach and out to sea from the bottom of the main street.
There are some lovely, friendly spots for a bite to eat (The Red Lion Pub and Restaurant, The Hope and Anchor Bar and Restaurant, and The Village Tea Rooms Cafe to name a few favourites!) and in the summer you can purchase some fab local produce from Scott’s of Alnmouth deli and dine alfresco on the shore.

We asked the owners what drew them to North Star:
We live in Yorkshire, but have been visiting Northumberland regularly since we found ourselves in the bar of The Olde Ship in Seahouses one lunchtime in the autumn of 1996. At first we would stay in hotels and holiday cottages; then we came in our camper van, and for the last 2 years we have owned a static caravan in Seahouses. We love the open skies, the people, the coastal and inland walks, the castles, the local ales and food. We come at all times of the year and enjoy them all but we particularly love visiting during the winter when we always seem to be lucky with the weather.
Since our retirement, we have been thinking about buying a holiday property so that we can share our love of the county with others. We have been following the development of the Alnwick Malthouse since the start and when the opportunity to purchase an apartment arose last year, we didn’t need much persuasion. Alnwick is a lovely town in itself, with The Castle and Gardens, the wonderful Barter Bookshop, beautiful walks and interesting places to eat and drink. It is also a central base for visiting a wealth of Northumberland’s nearby attractions, both coastal and inland which we hope you will enjoy discovering, returning in the evening to our very comfortable, cosy apartment.
