Orchard House Barn near Corbridge is a gorgeous cottage in a walking and cycling paradise. Situated in the pretty hamlet of Sandhoe, Orchard House Barn in the stunning Tyne Valley provides the perfect base for exploring West Northumberland and the surrounding area, including the famous World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall and the Coast and Castles which make the County so interesting. This gorgeous self-catering accommodation near Hadrian’s Wall is romantic, luxurious and practical for couples, but is also just an easy 30 minute drive from Newcastle too.
Orchard House Barn is cosy in the winter with it’s deep, squashy Knoll sofa and huge range-style wood burning stove, yet colourful and bright in the summer with the pretty, flowered patio which is a sun trap. This luxury self-catering cottage is well position for discovering the historic village of Corbridge. You can walk into the village in around 45 minutes as it’s 2.1 miles away, although driving takes just 5 minutes. Corbridge is an upmarket village with a concentrated selection of divine deli’s, gorgeous pubs and restaurants and boutique shops.
This sumptuous and romantic barn conversion is beautifully furnished and very well equipped, perfect for couples or 2 people sharing together – walkers and cyclists will be spoiled for choice! It’s also less than 30 minutes’ drive away from the beautiful wedding venue, Capheaton Hall. Sleeps just 2 and welcomes 1 small dog.
Orchard House Barn near Corbridge lends itself very well to couples, with the option of a super-king bed, or you can request twin single beds if preferred, with the rest of the accommodation being almost on one level (some odd steps) and the living areas spacious and airy, providing the perfect flexible accommodation for all seasons.
Orchard House Barn is fully centrally heated with the benefit of a magnificent wood burning stove to provide that extra ambiance during the cooler months. Free wi-fi is available throughout the cottage and 1 small dog is welcome too for a small charge of £20 per holiday – no bigger than a spaniel (2 toy-sized dogs are also welcome by arrangement, please contact us direct to enquire).
The owners live adjacent to the property and have a wealth of knowledge about the area, especially for walkers and cyclists keen to get a local’s insight into the best trails and routes around the area. Whilst the cottage is still private, the owners are discreet but are there for you should you need their guidance and advice.
The entrance into Orchard House Barn is directly from the pretty patio area (up four steps) entering via the lobby/laundry room, perfect for taking off muddy boots and drying off a wet dog! The laundry room then leads into the bedroom to the right or the living area to the left.
Open Plan Lounge/Kitchen/Dining Room
With a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams, this open plan area is elegantly airy yet still cosy, lending itself perfectly to any season. The large wood burning stove is the focal point of the room with its beautiful antique pine surround. An initial supply of logs is provided between October and April. The sofa is very large and incredibly comfortable and there is an additional armchair (not shown below). Smart TV, DVD player, Bluetooth speaker, free Wi-Fi and an interesting selection of books and board games are also provided.
The luxury bespoke-fitted kitchen is stylish and contemporary, with the latest stainless steel appliances and natural granite work surfaces. Electric oven and gas hob, fridge and freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle and toaster (washing machine and tumble dryer in the laundry room/lobby area).
There is a large island with 2 bar stools for dining.
Bedroom with En Suite
A beautifully decorated and furnished room with a vaulted ceiling and super-king size (6ft wide) bed that can be converted into two full-size single (3ft wide) beds upon request. There’s a pretty view to the private courtyard and plenty of storage space with full-length bespoke sliding door wardrobes. Dressing table, luxury bed linen and fluffy towels are provided, along with a hairdryer.
Luxury En Suite Bathroom
Spacious fully tiled luxury en-suite bathroom containing a bath with a shower over, WC and wash hand basin. A Velux window provides natural light and there is a heated towel rail for drying towels. Complimentary White Company toiletries are provided.
The laundry room is also the entrance lobby into Orchard House Barn. Here you will find a sink with storage underneath, a washing machine and tumble dryer. The boiler is housed here too and the work surface provides plenty of space for provisions.
Directly outside the door to Orchard House Barn is a pretty courtyard area with seating for two. Although adjacent to the owner’s house, this south-facing courtyard is for your use only.
Orchard House Barn near Corbridge is very near both the pretty village of Corbridge and the vibrant market town of Hexham, where a good range of restaurants, pubs, cafes, art galleries and lovely little independent shops can be found.
Historic Country Barn
Orchard House Barn has been beautifully designed to be not only modern – using a calm and relaxing colour scheme – but also to embrace the traditional elements of the barn. The deep Knoll sofa, ornate fire surround and wood burning stove all create the perfect winter retreat, whilst the pretty, flowered patio garden is a sun trap for the true summer country escape.

This is a service is arranged and paid for directly with the owners of Orchard House Barn and can be arranged once you have placed your booking. The same principle applies for the dog sitting service and the transport for walkers and cyclists too. Please contact us to discuss so we can check the availability of the owners. Dog sitting is also usually available from the owners too, subject to their availability.

There is a BBQ provided at Orchard House Barn. Which is available April – September. Please bring your own charcoal. Please ensure the BBQ is cleaned prior to your departure.
There is private, off-road parking for one car just outside the courtyard to the Barn. Further car parking can be made available if required.

Hypo-allergenic-filled duvet and pillows are provided on the bed. There is no feather alternative available.

Accommodation on 1 floor. 3 stone steps up to the front door and 2 steps down to the open plan kitchen/lounge and diner. The shower is over the bath.

No children are able to be accommodated at the barn.
Comfortable bar stools are provided for dining at the large island in the kitchen, rather than a traditional dining table and chairs.

Orchard House Barn also has more local facilities available just 3 miles away in the larger nearby medieval Abbey town of Hexham. Hadrian’s Wall is just 15 minutes drive away to reach the Hadrian’s Wall Path at Hexham. Orchard House Barn is also less than 30 minutes’ drive away from Capheaton Hall, the stunning and popular wedding venue.

We’ve had a wonderful stay here at Orchard House Barn. The barn was everything we could have hoped for, and a perfect base for exploring Northumberland and County Durham. Our highlights have been Gibside, Beamish, Wallington and having a potter around Corbridge (we had an excellent lunch at Tea and Tipple and picked up some extremely tasty treats from Grants Bakery!) Tips from a local
If staying in this beautiful part of our country then a visit to Hadrian’s Wall is an absolute MUST. In particular Vindolanda, Houseteads, and Steel Rigg. For the latter take your walking boots if you really want one of the finest views from along the wall and would like to see Sycamore Gap.
Tips from a local
Visit Corbridge and Hexham. Corbridge is a very pretty village with bespoke shops, lovely coffee shops, some great eateries and a Church worth having a look in. It’s full of history which oozes from its streets and the River Tyne adjacent.
Hexham is a bigger place; a market town with a fantastic Abbey and all the modern facilities you would expect, as well as an ancient Gaol.
Tips from a local
Have a drive down to Blanchland and visit The Lord Crewe Arms and have a drink in the Crypt bar. Awarding winning ‘hotel of the year’ in 2016, this pub has fantastic reviews and the food is fantastic. It’s also in the North Pennines AONB.

We asked Jeff and Carol, the owners, about the history and what made them fall in love with Orchard House Barn:
“Before our family moved in to Orchard House, the inhabitants of this cluster of barns were cows and tractors! Orchard House Barn is the annex to our main property where the grandmother of our four children lived until recently, and she is now living in Newcastle. We have nothing in this hamlet other than a post box; no bus service, just dark nights, nice neighbours and peace and quiet.
The refurbishment was completed in mid-2016 to a high standard; we were very happy to receive 5 Star rating. We are adjacent if you need help with anything; if you have a dog ours, Osca (pictured) a working Cocker, will no doubt show an interest – actually he will show an interest regardless!
Sandhoe is a simple, no nonsense hamlet and was once the working heart of the Beaufront Estate in the middle of some very nice countryside, not far from ‘civilization’ where the beer and the food are top notch – come and find out for yourself. It’s so good we have no intention of moving!”
