The beautiful, idyllic riverbank is right outside the patio, so you watch the wildlife on the patio in a morning with a hot cup of coffee. The views are really pretty looking down the Coquet estuary directly to Amble harbour, and the odd seal has even been spotted there!
The walk to the beach is very pretty, following the riverbank and will take about 15 minutes on foot. The nearest pub is The Sun Inn, which has a great steakhouse restaurant inside too, which is just 200 yards around the corner.
Walking to the fishing port of Amble is very easy from Owl Cottage, as it’s just a mile down the estuary. Here you will find the harbour market on a Sunday, as well as a fantastic selection of delicious seafood restaurants and bistro’s, as well as the renowned Spurelli ice cream parlour serving ‘illy’ coffee too.

Tips from a local
Coming to stay in the warmer months? Get on the beach with a disposable BBQ and have a BBQ on the beach! Warkworth beach is never crowded, so you will have the beach to yourselves! The best bit to have a BBQ is the furthest south end of the beach, where it’s nice and flat but sheltered from any strong winds. Go to The Amble Butcher on Amble High Street for the best sausages.
Go on, do something different!
Tips from a local
Put away the frying pan and nip along to Bertram’s for a hearty breakfast in front of the roaring fire! From the traditional full English and local favourite Craster Kippers, to something a little lighter such as homemade porridge with fresh cream and berries or fresh fruit with granola and yoghurt, coupled with a hot mug of fresh coffee, you can reward yourself after a long walk on the beach and set yourself up for the rest of the day. The best bit? It’s dog friendly!
Tips from a local
Have a walk along to Amble along the Estuary – the walk to Amble harbour will take around 20 minutes on foot and it follows the Coquet Estuary with its abundance of wildlife. Cut through the boatyard to get to the harbour front and watch the trawlers come in. The harbour market on Sunday is interesting and you may even get some bargins! If you visit in the cooler months, be sure to where your thermals and be well-wrapped up. That North Sea air is refreshing yet bitter!
Owners of Owl Cottage
We asked The Nightingales what they love most about Owl Cottage:
“We first fell in love with Owl Cottage whilst staying as guests and we couldn’t believe our luck when the opportunity arose for us to buy it!
The riverside location is perfect and it can be hard to tear ourselves away from the wonderful views all the way down the river to the estuary at Amble. We also love how spacious the house feels, even when we have filled it with friends and family.
Our little boy adores playing on Warkworth Beach, in all weathers and at all times of the year! We still can’t believe how uncrowded it is. It often feels like we have it to ourselves, even on the most beautiful summer day. It’s great to be able to leave the car on the driveway and stroll to the beach. Afterwards, we reward ourselves with a hot chocolate in the village when it’s cold – or a gin & tonic in the garden when it’s not! We have also enjoyed some wonderful sunsets wandering back along the river after a meal and glass of wine at one of the great restaurants in Amble. After all, we are on holiday!
Owl Cottage is a very special place and we love being able to share it with our guests.”
