A Charming Cottage in Warkworth Village with Stunning Castle and Sea Views
Piggyback Cottage is a beautifully renovated cottage with rustic decor in the medieval village of Warkworth. With gorgeous views over the castle grounds to Warkworth Castle and the Warkworth beach dunes and sea beyond, this cottage in Northumberland is a cosy and luxurious retreat in an excellent spot.
Piggyback Cottage sleeps five guests (inc. children over 5 years old) and is in a great location for exploring the Coquet riverbank, the atmospheric English Heritage site ‘The Hermitage’, as well as Warkworth beach, the well preserved 14th century Warkworth Castle and the pretty village. Walking into the village is an easy 10-15 minute walk where you’ll find a choice of four excellent foodie pubs, interesting little independent shops, great cafes and restaurants.
This luxury Northumberland holiday cottage welcomes two well behaved dogs. The open plan layout of the cottage is cosy yet perfect for socialising, it’s ideal for couples, small families with children over 5 yrs or friends holidaying together. Piggyback Cottage is close to the charming villages and towns of Alnwick, Alnmouth, Amble, Lesbury, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Beadnell, Embleton and Rothbury.
Piggyback Cottage sleeps five guests in three bedrooms; two kingsize rooms and one single bedroom. One of the king size rooms is on the ground floor and has an en-suite bathroom, which is ideal for guests with limited mobility. Children must be 5 years old or older to stay at this cottage as it’s not equipped for younger children.
The open plan living space is gorgeous and quaint, decorated with a rustic twist. The cottage was completely renovated in 2020. There’s a wood-burning stove in the lounge area and the kitchen is bright and airy with sky-lights and a central island, perfect for socialising.
Parking is available in front of the cottage on the quiet roadside and there’s a pretty, north-west-facing courtyard at the side of the cottage. Free Wi-Fi throughout the cottage.
Access is through the pretty courtyard into the porch where boots and coats can be stored. The cloakroom WC is just off the porch and beyond you enter into the open plan living space.
Open Plan Kitchen/Diner
This lovely room benefits from soft lighting and two sky-lights letting natural light stream in. With an under-bench fridge, freezer, electric single oven, induction hob, dishwasher, microwave, kettle and toaster, the kitchen is very well equipped. A Nescafe Dolce Gusto coffee machine with an initial supply of pods is provided.
Dining seating for up to five guests.
The focus of the cosy lounge is a fabulous wood-burning stove housed in a pretty brick fireplace. An initial supply of logs, kindling and firelighters is provided between October and April. Additional supplies available locally. Large Smart TV with access to Netflix, three-seater and two-seater sofas, north-east facing windows. Bluetooth speaker.
Master Bedroom with En-Suite Bathroom
On the ground floor, accessible from the lounge is the master bedroom. With north-east facing windows and a king size bed, this bedroom has a Smart TV, wardrobe, dressing table and an en suite bathroom. The en-suite bathroom contains a large, walk in shower with rainfall head and additional attachment, WC, wash hand basin and heated towel rail. Luxury bed linen, towels and complimentary toiletries are provided.

Situated just off the kitchen, the utility room houses a washing machine and a sink. (No tumble dryer.)
This bedroom is the largest and benefits from gorgeous views of the magnificent castle, the coastline and the countryside from dual-aspect windows facing north east and west. benefiting from the evening sun in the summer. One has a Juliette balcony to maximise the views. There’s a Smart TV with access to Netflix and an inbuilt DVD player. King size bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, luxury bed linen and towels are provided. The head of the bed is under the eaves of the roof, so head height is slightly restricted.
This pretty bedroom benefits from a huge window looking over to Warkworth Castle, the sand dunes and sea beyond. There’s a full-size single bed (3ft wide), hanging space, luxury bed linen and towels, and a Smart TV with inbuilt DVD player.
The wooden-panelled bathroom has a claw foot bath with a rainfall shower above and additional attachment, WC, wash basin and heated towel rail. Complimentary toiletries are provided.
Gardens, Outside and Parking
The pretty landscaped patio-courtyard at the front of the property is north-west-facing with furniture to seat five. Parking is available in front of the cottage, and whilst not designated, it is a quiet road and parking is almost always available.

Care of the Property
Our ‘Coquet’ cottages are much-loved privately-owned holiday homes into which our owners have lavished much care and investment to create beautiful and comfortable places for their guests to enjoy. We therefore require a cautionary Good Housekeeping Deposit to protect our owners’ property, so that if damage/breakages occur or exceptional cleaning over and above the usual changeover clean is required, up to the value of the deposit, the owner can be readily recompensed.

Map & Local Area
Piggyback Cottage is situated on a quiet road leading to the path that takes you to the small English Heritage site, The Hermitage. In a quiet spot, you have dog walkers passing but not much else! The cottage is in a great position behind the castle with beautiful, elevated views of Warkworth Castle and the beach dunes and sea beyond. To get to the main street of the village will take you around 10 minutes on foot.
In the village you have 4 pubs, all of which serve great food and welcome dogs into the bar. There are 2 cafe’s, one of which is Bertram’s – that’s dog friendly and their breakfasts are lovely. There’s also a great selection of pretty gift shops, art gallery and even a French Patisserie.
Alnwick Castle with its world-famous Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Treehouse is just 15 minutes’ drive away, as well as the market town of Alnwick with its farmer markets in the town square. You’ve also got the seaside village of Alnmouth just 10 minutes north in the car and also the friendly fishing port of Amble just 5 minutes south in the car, which you can walk to in about half an hour. Bamburgh and Holy Island are further north and can all be reached by following the coastal route along our stunning coastline.
Inland you will find the country town of Rothbury and further afield the amazing Kielder Forest and reservoir, famous for its Dark Skies. Everything is so accessible from Warkworth village, but there is enough to do in walking distance without even getting in the car!

Tips from a local
Put away the frying pan and nip along to Bertram’s for a hearty breakfast in front of the roaring fire! From the traditional full English and local favourite Craster Kippers, to something a little lighter such as homemade porridge with fresh cream and berries or fresh fruit with granola and yoghurt, coupled with a hot mug of fresh coffee, you can reward yourself after a long walk on the beach and set yourself up for the rest of the day. The best bit? It’s dog friendly!
Tips from a local
Find some interesting sea-critters in the rock pools at the northern end of Warkworth beach at Birling Rocks. Head to the beach and take a left, heading north up the coast. Walk as far as you can and you will reach the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Seals have been spotted on these rocks many times, so you may be lucky! At the south end of the beach there is a pier leads right out with gorgeous views of Coquet Island and the Amble harbour.
Tips from a local
Visit Warkworth Castle, an impressive medieval ruin in the centre of the village which dates back to the 1100’s, and is now looked after by English Heritage. The history of the castle and village is fascinating, and with its spiral staircases, towers and lawned grounds to explore, the castle provides an excellent afternoon out for all the family, less than 5 minutes’ walk from the cottage.
Tips from a local
Take a walk along the estuary to Amble Fishing Town. Just over a mile from Warkworth, Amble offers stunning coastal scenery around the marina, harbour and pier. A browse around the pods in the Harbour Village are a great way to spend an afternoon, visiting local artists and independent shops, with a stop off at The Fish Shack for a bite to eat in the authentic dining hut.
