Saltwater Cottage is as gorgeous as the name suggests, being coastal yet not in the hustle and bustle of the popular town of Seahouses. A very pleasant and unique feature of Saltwater Cottage is the large windows at both the front and the back, letting natural sunlight flood into every room.

This coastal cottage near the sea sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms; 1 king size room and 1 twin room with 2 x single beds. These beds can’t be converted into super king. Downstairs comprises of a cosy lounge centered around the wood burning stove with a lovely bay window giving a traditional feel to a contemporary-furnished room. The open plan kitchen and dining area has a slight natural divide but focuses on the view from 3 elevations out to the pretty, flowering garden.

There is free Wi-Fi at Saltwater Cottage and two well-behaved dogs are welcome.

The cottage has a quaint entrance into a small porch, which is useful for taking off shoes. The hallway then leads into the lounge, the kitchen-diner or straight up the stairs.

The bright and airy aspect to Saltwater Cottage stretches to the lounge too, and with a wood-burning stove as a welcome addition in the cooler months, this room is cosy and pleasant with a Smart TV and games. There is a 3-seater sofa and a cuddle chair with a footstool, which is ample space for 4 guests to gather. An initial supply of logs are provided between October and April. More can be purchased locally from the garage in Seahouses.

This sunny space is south-east facing, meaning the sun is beautiful in a morning and continues through to the evening, making the kitchen and patio outside a glorious space to enjoy breakfast or the first coffee of the day. The kitchen is well-equipped and includes a fridge, freezer, electric oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, cafetiere, Belfast sink and washing machine in the utility space.

Utility Room and WC

This useful space is between the kitchen and the garage and houses the washing machine, WC, wash hand basin and heated towel rail.

Leading from the utility room, the garage is small and cannot house a car but is very handy for storing beach equipment and sandy shoes! You can access the garage from the front of the property too.

First Floor

Stairs lead to a landing which leads to the 2 bedrooms and the family bathroom.

Master Bedroom

Opening the door to this lovely room is always a a pleasant surprise. The windows span the length of the room and look out to the pretty garden and on to the fields beyond with resident horses. In the master bedroom you’ll find ample wardrobe space, a king size bed (5ft wide) and plenty of room. Luxurious, soft linens and White Company towels are provided, as well as a hairdryer.

Twin Bedroom

Located at the front of the house, this room is a little smaller yet has the huge windows again spanning the length of the room letting in an equal amount of light as the master room. Here you’ll find 2 single beds (full size, 3ft wide) and small wall-hung hooks for hanging items. The storage space in this bedroom is very limited so there is enough wardrobe space in the master bedroom for 2 bedrooms. Luxurious, soft linens and White Company towels are provided.

Family Bathroom

Located directly between the 2 bedrooms, the family bathroom has a window letting in natural light, an electric shower over the bath, wash hand basin with lots of surface storage space, WC and a small heated towel rail. Temple-Spa toiletries are provided.

One of the best features of Saltwater Cottage is the gorgeous, enclosed, south-east-facing garden. Leading from the kitchen is a deep patio with glass balustrades, on which sits a small table and 4 chairs. The garden area is down a handful of steps and is lawned and filled with evergreen shrubs and seasonal flowers.

There is private, off-road parking for 1 car on the driveway in front of the cottage. Additional parking is on the roadside right outside the cottage, which is not private.

Map & Local Area

Saltwater Cottage is superbly situated within walking distance of St. Aiden’s beach and the popular seaside village of Seahouses, with its many shops, restaurants, picturesque harbour and the famous ‘Ship Inn’.

North Sunderland expanded into Seahouses when the fishermen built summer sea houses so they could live closer the harbour the during the Herring season. The harbour to this day is still called North Sunderland Harbour and remains very busy but not with working trawlers; it’s now busy with visitors catching boats to the nearby Farne Islands to see the fantastic nature including the seal & bird colonies.  Today North Sunderland still remains close enough to the hustle bustle of Seahouses whilst being a perfect location to access all the coastal gems & the beautiful Northumberland countryside.  It has also just acquired its very own local pub; the Longstone Hotel, serving good food, which is just a couple of minutes easy walk from Saltwater Cottage.

It’s also a great central location from which to explore all of Northumberland, including Bamburgh (just 5 minutes drive), Alnwick, Holy Island and The Borders. There are excellent swimming pools at Berwick (with flume and wave machine) and Alnwick, around 25 minutes’ drive.

Many thanks for your card and the lovely bubbles which we enjoyed on Saturday evening!  It was a really kind thought and much appreciated.  In fact we felt very spoilt with everything in the hamper too – Harry particularly enjoyed the Malteasers!

Tips from a local

Boat Trip to the Farne Islands

It goes without saying that a boat trip from Seahouses harbour is a must if you’re so close to such a fascinating wildlife area! This is a great experience for all the family and it’s fun to spot the different birds that are nesting and breeding that season. You may even sea the seals if your here in the late summer, and a twilight cruise is always fun if you manage to book onto a later trip.

Seahouses harbour is open to the public and is really interesting to explore, which is where you catch the boat from.

Try Bill Shiel’s boat trips. They’re the oldest and largest company operating in Seahouses and are family-run, even including the staff in the booking office.

Tips from a local

Try Horse Riding along the beach

Whether you’re an experienced rider or have never been on a horse before, you can’t beat such a beautiful setting for a stroll out that Seahouses or Bamburgh beach.

Slate Hall Riding Centre offer the chance to experience the beautiful scenery on a horse and prices start from £45 for an hour on the beach for a rider who has rode a horse before.

We recommend booking in advance as they can get busy in the summer season.

Tips from a local

Treat yourself to a Pamper Day

Enjoy some ‘me’ time and indulge in a spa day or treatment at The Ocean Club in Seahouses. Walking distance from Saltwater Cottage, The Ocean Club is a leisure club as well as having a gorgeous spa. Their treatments are excellent and on the full or half-day spa days you can even enjoy an afternoon tea!

It’s recommended you book in advance especially in the busy seasons.

Jo & Simon

Owners of Saltwater Cottage

We asked Jo & Simon why they fell in love with Saltwater Cottage and the area:

“We feel so lucky to have Saltwater Cottage. It’s our dream come true. We bought the property in 2018 and completely renovated it over 12 months. Our idea was to have a complete escape from the city and the trappings of busy modern life. As soon as we arrive at the cottage we just feel the change of pace, it’s so quiet and calm and we’ve tried really hard to decorate and furnish it in a way that makes it a soothing and comforting place to be.

We have two young boys who just love being on the beach, their favourite thing in the world is exploring the rockpools on St Aidan’s beach. There’s nothing better than a walk on a windswept Northumberland beach, followed by a roaring log fire and a glass of wine when we get back to the cottage!”
