Map & Local Area
Saltwater Cottage is superbly situated within walking distance of St. Aiden’s beach and the popular seaside village of Seahouses, with its many shops, restaurants, picturesque harbour and the famous ‘Ship Inn’.
North Sunderland expanded into Seahouses when the fishermen built summer sea houses so they could live closer the harbour the during the Herring season. The harbour to this day is still called North Sunderland Harbour and remains very busy but not with working trawlers; it’s now busy with visitors catching boats to the nearby Farne Islands to see the fantastic nature including the seal & bird colonies. Today North Sunderland still remains close enough to the hustle bustle of Seahouses whilst being a perfect location to access all the coastal gems & the beautiful Northumberland countryside. It has also just acquired its very own local pub; the Longstone Hotel, serving good food, which is just a couple of minutes easy walk from Saltwater Cottage.
It’s also a great central location from which to explore all of Northumberland, including Bamburgh (just 5 minutes drive), Alnwick, Holy Island and The Borders. There are excellent swimming pools at Berwick (with flume and wave machine) and Alnwick, around 25 minutes’ drive.

Many thanks for your card and the lovely bubbles which we enjoyed on Saturday evening! It was a really kind thought and much appreciated. In fact we felt very spoilt with everything in the hamper too – Harry particularly enjoyed the Malteasers!

Tips from a local
Boat Trip to the Farne Islands
It goes without saying that a boat trip from Seahouses harbour is a must if you’re so close to such a fascinating wildlife area! This is a great experience for all the family and it’s fun to spot the different birds that are nesting and breeding that season. You may even sea the seals if your here in the late summer, and a twilight cruise is always fun if you manage to book onto a later trip.
Seahouses harbour is open to the public and is really interesting to explore, which is where you catch the boat from.
Try Bill Shiel’s boat trips. They’re the oldest and largest company operating in Seahouses and are family-run, even including the staff in the booking office.

Try Horse Riding along the beach
Whether you’re an experienced rider or have never been on a horse before, you can’t beat such a beautiful setting for a stroll out that Seahouses or Bamburgh beach.
Slate Hall Riding Centre offer the chance to experience the beautiful scenery on a horse and prices start from £45 for an hour on the beach for a rider who has rode a horse before.
We recommend booking in advance as they can get busy in the summer season.

Jo & Simon
Owners of Saltwater Cottage
We asked Jo & Simon why they fell in love with Saltwater Cottage and the area:
“We feel so lucky to have Saltwater Cottage. It’s our dream come true. We bought the property in 2018 and completely renovated it over 12 months. Our idea was to have a complete escape from the city and the trappings of busy modern life. As soon as we arrive at the cottage we just feel the change of pace, it’s so quiet and calm and we’ve tried really hard to decorate and furnish it in a way that makes it a soothing and comforting place to be.
We have two young boys who just love being on the beach, their favourite thing in the world is exploring the rockpools on St Aidan’s beach. There’s nothing better than a walk on a windswept Northumberland beach, followed by a roaring log fire and a glass of wine when we get back to the cottage!”
