Map & Local Area

The walk to Sunny Cottage from the riverbank is quite romantic; through 2 pretty archways then leading through the little gardens to the front door.  Whilst the riverbank is only yards from the front door, it still feels private and secluded.  The main street of the village is just 5 minutes away on foot, and the beach just 15 minutes’ walk or less than 5 minutes’ drive away.

Warkworth is a gorgeous village to explore – tons of history and interesting things to see, as well has having restaurants, a French patisserie, several pubs and interesting little independent shops and art galleries. Most of the eating places are dog friendly too.  Everything is so accessible from Warkworth village, but there is enough to do in walking distance without needing the car!

Alnwick Castle with its world-famous Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Treehouse is just 15 minutes’ drive away, as well as the vibrant and historic market town of Alnwick with its farmers market in the town square and super range of independent shops showcasing a great range of Northumbrian produce. Bamburgh and Holy Island are further north and can all be reached by following the coastal route along our stunning coastline. Inland you will find the country town of Rothbury with the fascinating counry house and grounds of Cragside, and further afield the amazing Kielder forest and reservoir, famous for its Dark Skies.

Beautiful Cottage very centrally placed for everything in Warkworth. Anything we needed to know was right there to hand in the very informative guest information provided – have to say one of the best we’ve ever had and we’ve stayed in quite a lot of properties. Perfection!! What else is there to say – It just went on and on! The baked goods and lovely flowers too!! Never had so much and we used it all too! There was a little bit of everything – even in the doggy basket. Just fab!! We felt relaxed and at home the minute we walked through the door. Spent a lot of time in the little conservatory area adjoining the lounge – lovely for mornings for breakfast and relaxing of an evening too. Everything was perfect for us. I have to commend you as a company – we had text messages or phone calls at every key point of our holiday right up to the very last day. Very thorough and very caring and we felt ‘looked after’ the whole time. You were only a phone call away if needs be. Your properties and attention to detail are second to none even down to the little toiletries provided.

Tips from a local

Find some interesting sea-critters in the rock pools at the northern end of Warkworth beach at Birling Rocks. Head to the beach and take a left, heading north up the coast. Walk as far as you can and you will reach the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Seals have been spotted on these rocks many times, so you may be lucky! At the south end of the beach there is a pier leads right out with gorgeous views of Coquet Island and the Amble harbour.

Tips from a local

Put away the frying pan and nip along to Bertram’s for a hearty breakfast in front of the roaring fire! From the traditional full English and local favourite Craster Kippers, to something a little lighter such as homemade porridge with fresh cream and berries or fresh fruit with granola and yoghurt, coupled with a hot mug of fresh coffee, you can reward yourself after a long walk on the beach and set yourself up for the rest of the day. The best bit? It’s dog friendly!

Tips from a local

Fancy a good walk? Why not walk to Alnmouth along the cycle route, paired with beautiful views of the coast and the Balamory-style houses in Alnmouth. The walk is about 4 miles long each way and is a fairly flat and an easy walk along a proper path. When you arrive at Alnmouth there are 4 pubs and a handful of cafes to fuel up, but if you are simply defeated you can catch the bus straight back to Warkworth which takes about 10 minutes. They are fairly regular and dogs are welcome on the bus too.

Tips from a local

Visit The Masons Arms, probably the most atmospheric pub in Warkworth, serving good pub food in a nice setting right in the centre of the village. They serve hearty food each day and Sunday lunch, you can even take your dog with you too. They occasionally have live music on during the year, so keep an eye out on their website. They have a huge beer garden that’s all been recently refurbished with a pizza hut and more, which is a sun trap too.

Tips from a local

Enjoy a peaceful walk around Warkworth village followed by a boat trip to discover the hidden ancient ruins of Warkworth Hermitage, a captivating religious building carved out of rock, established as a private chapel. Please click HERE to find out more.

Julie and Mark

We asked the owners of Sunny Cottage, Julie and Mark, what they love most about the cottage:

“It took a long time to restore this cottage in the depths of winter to what it is today, which is a luxury, cosy, comfortable and home-from-home holiday cottage – exactly what we were aiming for and more.

Before moving to the area we used the cottage as our little Northumbrian bolthole, to escape from hectic life and unwind in pure comfort.

We always holidayed in the winter for weekends when we could get up here. Our best memories are wrapping up warmly, going for a brisk walk on the beach with the cloear skies, sunshine and crisp air, returning to Sunny Cottage to collapse in front of the fire with a hot cup of coffee, something sweet as a treat and our Great Dane snoozing on the rug in front of the cosy fire.

Sunny Cottage holds so many happy memories for us as a family, it’s such a joy to see others enjoying it too.”
