Why the strange name? A gin gan, wheelhouse, roundhouse or horse-engine house, is a structure built to enclose a horse engine, usually circular but sometimes square or octagonal, attached to a threshing barn. Most were built in England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Map & Local Area

The Gin Gan near Seahouses is superbly situated within walking distance of the wide and sandy St. Aiden’s beach and the popular seaside village of Seahouses, with its many shops, restaurants, picturesque harbour and the famous ‘Olde Ship Inn’. It is also a great central location from which to explore all of Northumberland, including Bamburgh (just 10 minutes drive), AlnwickHoly Island and The Borders. There are excellent swimming pools at Berwick (with flume and wave machine) and Alnwick, around 25 minutes’ drive.

Village Farm is a recently built, peaceful and very attractive development of an old farm steading, which is quite a sun trap being away from the sea front. The newly refurbished restaurant at Longstone House, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the cottage, is open every evening and for Sunday lunches, and has a great reputation for food. It has a bar and beer garden too.

Absolutely amazing five star cottage with everything you could wish for and more, high quality throughout along with an excellent location, couldn’t have asked for any more, the best we’ve ever encountered. Extremely thoughtful and helpful owners, highly recommend. Lovely selection, something for everyone and wasn’t expected. Beautiful fresh flowers also. Helpful starter too for having breakfast foods of bread, milk, tea coffee, fresh orange butter and jam. Had excellent communication with the owner, very helpful.

Tips from a local

Dine at The Potted Lobster, Bamburgh

Taste the most delicious, locally sourced seafood at The Potted Lobster positioned in the heart of Bamburgh village. The Potted Lobster has a real Mediterranean feel inside the restaurant with beautiful décor. Why not try it’s famous potted lobster starter which is a mixture of local lobster, brown shrimp, fresh crab and smoked salmon set in butter and served with warm toast (think post potted shrimp!) and wash it down with a local ale or glass of wine. Be sure to book well in advance as it’s a very popular restaurant!

Visit The Farne Islands

The Farne Islands lie two to three miles off the Northumberland coast midway between the fishing village of Seahouses and the Castle of Bamburgh. There are between 15 and 20 islands depending on the state of the tide. From April until the end of July, these islands are dominated by one of the most exciting seabird colonies in the United Kingdom with unrivalled views of 23 species, including tens of thousands pairs of puffins, the sight is a joy to behold. The islands are also the permanent home for a large colony of Atlantic or Grey Seals and one of the top grey seal pupping sites in England.

We would recommend taking a boat tour out to the Farne Islands with Billy Shiel’s Boat Trips. This is ‘a must’ when you come to Northumberland, especially as The Gin Gan is located so close to Seahouses. Make sure you book in advance as they are incredibly popular, especially after being featured on the much-loved TV series ‘Tales from Northumberland’ with Robson Green.

Horse Riding along the Coast

Just behind the church in the village of North Sunderland is the Slate Hall Riding Centre. They offer treks for beginners and experienced riders either along the beach or in the countryside. A very relaxing way of exploring the area ‘on horse’!

Find out the history of Grace Darling

Take an educational but interesting visit to the Grace Darling Museum located in Bamburgh village. This museum tells the tale of Grace Darling who was born in Bamburgh in 1814 and moved to Longstone Lighthouse alongside her family, which is located on one of the Farne Islands. Grace Darling was the daughter of the lighthouse keeper and one stormy evening in 1838, a steamship ran aground onto rocks and broke in two so Grace and her father set out in a rowing boat and rescued 9 people as a result of their heroic actions.

Owners of The Gin Gan

We asked the owners of The Gin Gan what drew them to the cottage:

Driving north up the A1 to Northumberland the weight of our busy lives lifts from our shoulders as soon as we reach the county sign and life back home is forgotten. We are both Yorkshire tykes, born and bred, but have forsaken “God’s Own County” and, as hard as it may be for us to admit, Yorkshire has to play second fiddle to North Northumberland. The pace of life is slower, calmer and so very enticing, and so when the opportunity was presented to buy our dream retirement home at the coast we immediately leapt in the car and drove to Seahouses to search for one.

The first one we were introduced to was The Gin Gan situated in Village Farm, a collection of individual homes created from what was once a farm in the middle of the quiet village of North Sunderland, opposite the church and a two minute walk from the family run Longstone House restaurant and bar (a must), with a 10 minute walk into Seahouses for its shops, pubs and restaurants, and close to a quiet footpath to the beach, also ten minutes away.

Observed from the outside it’s a honey-coloured stone barn conversion with a strangely shaped conical roofed appendage, but once the front door was opened we were transported, Tardis-like, into the French Riviera or New England, being presented with the light flooded open plan kitchen, sitting and dining room painted in sun soaked sea hues and the feel of smooth cool Tuscan stone under our feet, which are then warmed to a toasty glow in winter with the underfloor heating.  Every door which was opened revealed yet another beautiful room and we were unable to get the cottage out of our minds, despite common sense telling us that we had others to see. One by one they were all cast aside, and the fact that our dog is named Gin simply sealed the deal. It was Kismet.

We hope that you love sharing The Gin Gan with “The Gin Gang”, until the day when those tiresome journeys up the A1 from Yorkshire end, and it is our permanent home by the sea.
