Map & Local Area

Known as ‘The Gateway to the Cheviots’, Wooler is the perfect base for a picturesque country getaway.

This pretty town has plenty to offer, with superb cafes, restaurants, pubs and quaint shops on the main street, just a very short stroll from The Old Vet’s Surgery. The locals are very friendly, and although the town is small, Wooler has a plethora of activities and events nearby to partake in during your stay. The Farmer’s Market is held on one Sunday of every month from April through to October, with a special Christmas Market held at the beginning of December. The nearby Glendale show on August Bank Holiday Monday is always a huge success with both locals and visitors from far and wide, and Wooler even hosts its own annual ‘Glendale Music Festival’ on the 3rd weekend of July.

The surrounding area has you spoiled for choice, with Harthorpe Valley (commonly known as Langleeford), Ingram Valley, and Linhope Spout offering breath-taking walks towards the impressive Cheviot Hills, starting just a couple of miles from Wooler. Just 6 miles away, nestled on the Northumbrian Moors is eerie Chillingham Castle and Grounds, and the rare Wild Cattle of Chillingham.

If you’re heading to the coast, a 25 minute drive takes you to BamburghBeadnell and Seahouses, or for a full day out, the border town of Berwick (25 minutes North) has 2 gorgeous beaches, providing both coastal and country river walks with yet more lovely cafes and amenities to try out.

Catch the train up to Edinburgh

The capital of Scotland is so easy to reach from Wooler – you are on the Borders! The nearest train station is Berwick (around 20 minutes drive away) and once on the train, it’s an easy 45 minute journey up to the capital where you’ll land right in the centre of the city at Edinburgh Waverley station.

Photograph of Tommy Dunn

My father, Tommy Dunn, closed the surgery door for the last time in 1987

We asked Hamish and Catherine to tell us more about the history of The Old Vet’s Surgery:

“The Old Vet’s Surgery is a conversion of what was the original stables of the main house, Strathmore (our other holiday home).

Three generations of vets used the premises as a practice, which established circa 1900 by William Lyon, followed by his nephew Hugh Bain in 1930, then my father, Thomas (Tommy) Dunn, in 1955. What is now the kitchen served as the surgery for nearly 90 years, until my father retired in 1987. I remember it now, similar to an ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ film set, with customers waiting inside and out.

The bedroom was then the office/dispensary and the rest of the property was the waiting room and storage. Now the living room, was then a part-stable, where some farmers occasionally brought in larger animals for treatment in order to avoid a ‘call-out’ charge.

This property holds very happy memories for us, and we hope you enjoy staying here.

Hamish & Catherine Dunn”
