Within easy waking distance you will find all the amenities of the town at your fingertips. This includes both independent shops, greengrocers, a great butchers and some gorgeous gift shops. As well as a good selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes.

Beautiful walks are just a short distance away too, such as Hulne Park which is the outer grounds of Alnwick Castle, open to the public. The Puffin’s Burrow is pet-free and has free Wi-Fi.

Overview

The Puffin’s Burrow sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms; one double room and a twin single room. The living space is open-plan and benefits from a lovely enclosed patio area which is unusually large for an apartment. It was one family bathroom with a shower over the bath, and level access is from the front doors of the apartment building to the front door, as well as throughout the apartment.

The Puffin’s Burrow is ideal for couples and small families, with all the facilities of Alnwick town right on your doorstep. There is free Wi-Fi throughout and the apartment is pet-free; no dogs permitted.

Entrance

The entrance to the apartment building is into a beautiful glass atrium spanning 3 floors, where you can choose to use the stairs or the elevator to reach the first floor where The Puffin’s Burrow can be found. The entrance to the apartment itself is within the open atrium area, and leads straight into the hallway.

Open-Plan Living Space – Lounge

The cosy, west-facing lounge has two sofas, each seating up to two. The lounge has a floor-to-ceiling double window as well as a single glass door which leads out to the patio area, which is also west-facing. In the lounge you will find a wall-mounted Smart TV with full access to Netflix and a selection of books and games. Bluetooth/DAB radio speaker.

Kitchen

The kitchen area is well-stocked and contains a full-size integrated fridge/freezer, electric fan oven with ceramic hob, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster and Nespresso machine with a supply of pods. Amazon Echo Dot.

Dining Space

The dining table seats up to 4 guests and is neatly positioned between the lounge and kitchen area.

Patio

The Puffin’s Burrow has a pleasantly spacious patio area which is west-facing, ideal for a relaxing afternoon in the warmer months. There is a bench seat and two single chairs, as well as a small table for drinks. The patio can be accessed from both the lounge and the main bedroom, and it’s lovely to have the doors open on a warm day to benefit from indoor/outdoor living. No BBQs permitted.

Main Bedroom

The main bedroom contain a king-size bed (5ft wide), wardrobe, bedside tables and a full length mirror. This bedroom has a floor-to-ceiling glass door leading out to the enclosed patio, which is lovely to enjoy a coffee in the morning. The room also benefits from a Smart TV. Luxury linens, fluffy towels and a hair dryer are provided.

Twin Bedroom

This cosy room contains two single beds, both full-size singles (3ft wide). Hanging and drawer space is provided, as well as luxury linens and fluffy towels as standard. The window of this bedroom looks out to the atrium, with full black out blinds. Hairdryer.

Bathroom

The fully-tiled bathroom contains a bath over the shower, WC, wash basin, heated towel rail and a small amount of storage. Complimentary toiletries are provided.

Parking

There is one private parking space outdoors for The Puffin’s Burrow. Additional parking can be found around the town or in the public car park next door. There are plenty of parking spaces in Alnwick town using a ‘disc’ system, which is free of charge.

Parking
There is a private parking space for one car in an allocated bay outside the apartment building. Additional, free on-street parking can be found very close-by (parking disc required). There are no ‘guest’ spaces in the apartment parking area.

Outside
The west-facing patio can be accessed from both the lounge and the main bedroom. The patio is furnished with a bench seat and two additional relaxed chairs. There are lovely walks in and around Alnwick Castle to enjoy on foot directly from the apartment.

Two bedrooms; the main bedroom has a king-size bed (5ft wide) and the twin bedroom has single beds (3ft wide). No feather bedding, suitable for allergy sufferers.

Bike Storage
There are bike racks available in the car park area, shared with all residents of the apartment building. These are on a first-come-first-served basis and you will need to bring your own lock to keep it secure.

Pets
Pets are not permitted at The Puffin’s Burrow. The apartment is suitable for guests with dog allergies.

Accessibility
With the accommodation being all on one level and with level access from the front door using the lift, this apartment is well suited to those with limited mobility. Please note that the shower is over the bath rather than in a cubicle.

BBQ
BBQs are prohibited at the apartment due to the close proximity of other apartments.

Location
The Puffin’s Burrow is centrally located with all the amenities of Alnwick town on your doorstep, including magnificent Alnwick Castle and the world-famous Alnwick Garden.  The stunningly beautiful Heritage coastline is just around 10 minutes drive away, and a necklace of pretty coastal villages are strung along the Heritage coastline crying out to be explored, from Amble in the south up to Bamburgh in the north.  A drive across the causeway to Holy Island is not to be missed, and a boat trip to the nature reserves of the Farne Islands are unmissable too.  Inland The Cheviot Hills and Coquet Valley provide fantastic walking and cycling opportunities and grand country houses such as Cragside, Wallington Hall and Howick Hall provide historical and gardening interest.

The Puffin’s Burrow is right in the very heart of the medieval town of Alnwick and incredibly well situated for exploring the town, eating out and going for walks too, all without having to get in the car.  You can reach Alnwick Gardens and Castle on foot, as well as the famous Treehouse. The nearest entrance to Alnwick Castle is just 5 minutes walk away on Bailiffgate, but for the Treehouse it will take around 15-20 minutes on foot, but it’s an easy walk.

You can also discover the famous Barter Books in the centre of the town, which is no more than 10 minutes walk away from The Puffin’s Burrow.  This is a ‘must-do’, especially in the cooler months, when you can relax by the fire with a cuppa and a good book!  There are lots of little boutique shops, independent cafes and restaurants, as well as some great pubs around the town too, all just a short stroll away from the apartment.  Twice a week, the market place hosts a farmer’s market.

The coast is really easy to reach from Alnwick too, both north and south. Southbound you will come to AlnmouthWarkworth and Amble with quirky pubs, lovely cafes and interesting little independent shops. They all have lovely beaches too, and Amble has a very interesting working harbour, with the fabulous views.

To the north you have Craster with their nationally recognised Swallowfish kipper Smokehouse; Embleton with its stunning beach; Beadnell – a watersports haven; Seahouses harbour with the famous Billy Shiel’s Farne Islands boat tours, and Bamburgh with its magnificent castle.

The Puffin’s Burrow is a gorgeous holiday retreat in such a great location, with walks, great places to eat, the coast, shops and historical sites all at your fingertips.

Tips from a local

Barter Books in Alnwick;  the old Victorian train station converted into the most fabulous bookstore, is just about 10 minutes’ walk from the apartment. Every book you can possibly imagine is here, even some very valuable first additions on display. They have a lovely café converted from the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink. As the name suggests, you can bring old books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits so you can buy something new (or old!) to take home. Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Afternoon snoozing likely!

Tips from a local

Treat yourself to an Afternoon Tea at The Cookie Jar in Alnwick. Dine within the stunning, historic building of the former Convent of Mercy, in the cosy and stylish bistro. There is a full menu option, but the Afternoon Tea in particular is divine and very reasonably priced too! The Cookie Jar has a real luxurious feel throughout, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.

Tips from a local

Take a stroll from the apartment, through the town and over the stunning pastures surrounding Alnwick.

To complete the full loop, the walk takes roughly 2 hours, but there are a few different points where you can turn off the track and head back into the town if you’d prefer a shorter stroll. You’ll be stunned by the gorgeous views of Alnwick Castle (as seen on Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Transformers), and the River Aln trickling through the fields hosts a lovely setting to stop for a break and a picnic.

Tips from a local

Head to the coast and enjoy a day at Alnmouth, just 10 minutes’ drive from the apartment.

This gorgeous, historic village is full of character, with beautiful buildings and of course a breath-taking view over the dunes, sandy beach and out to sea from the bottom of the main street.

There are some lovely, friendly spots for a bite to eat (The Red Lion Pub and Restaurant, The Hope and Anchor Bar and Restaurant, and The Village Tea Rooms Cafe to name a few favourites!) and in the summer you can purchase some fab local produce from Scott’s of Alnmouth deli and dine alfresco on the shore.

Tips from a local

Cragside is a must when staying in this area of Northumberland. Cragside was the first country house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power by Lord Armstrong, a key figure in Northumberland. As well as the interesting house, the whole estate is open to the public with its magnificent walks and country trails, as well as a huge children’s play park and a nice café too.

A Word from the Owner…

As we both grew up in Alnwick and the surrounding villages, we still consider returning to the area as coming home. What we enjoy most about North Northumberland are the friendly locals, numerous cosy pubs, refreshing sea air, challenging hikes in the Cheviot hills and leisurely walks along vast sandy beaches. Despite travelling many hours, we always get excited as we pass the Angel of the North – a sign that our holiday has begun.

As a family, we always enjoy exploring rock pools and spotting nature at its best. We have been lucky enough the watch wild hares, stoats, deer, numerous seals, dolphins and of course our favourite the iconic puffin!

We love the outdoors and as well as walking we have spent many hours cycling to Alnmouth along the old railway line, sailing at Low Newton by the sea, climbing at Corby Crags, swimming in the sea and exploring rock pools.

As avid Harry Potter fans, our children love visiting Alnwick Castle, but we also enjoy exploring the many other historical castles and sites. A few favourites are Cragside, Holy Island, Duddo Stone Circle and Warkworth.

The Puffin’s Burrow is our cosy bolt hole where we love to relax after happy days spent in this beautiful part of the country. We have included lots of comforts to make it homely and welcoming. We hope you enjoy spending time here too.
