The Sewing Room
A Secluded Retreat near the beach in Arty Alnmouth
The Sewing Room in Alnmouth is part of a beautifully restored Georgian Grade II listed building, which was originally a carriage shed for the main house, accessed via the cobbled alley. In more recent years the outbuildings were converted to form The Sewing Room – a writers’ hideaway, where a famous local crime writer composed some well-known novels.
This gorgeous holiday cottage in Alnmouth has been lovingly renovated to create an idyllic retreat, nestled in a secluded courtyard offering a relaxing hidden bolthole, positioned to the rear of the main street. Internally, original features have been retained, including internal beams and timbers, and external original stonework. The sympathetically designed interior has a light, contemporary coastal styling in keeping with the architecture. The open-plan living space creates a homely, sociable vibe.
The Sewing Room is just a stones throw from the beach, where you can explore seven miles of golden sands. The quaint, friendly fishing village boasts an excellent art gallery (which also hosts different types of local ‘street food’ throughout the season), several cafes, a delicious deli and three pubs, all with restaurants, and Alnmouth village is home to the ‘oldest 9 hole golf course in England’.
The Sewing Room sleeps up to four guests and is ideal for a couple, two couples holidaying together, or a small family. Pet friendly too.
The Sewing Room sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms; 1 king size room and 1 twin single bedroom (fixed single beds). The master bedroom has an en-suite with a walk-in shower and there is also a small shower room/WC downstairs.
The open plan living space is sociable, light and airy. There is a small, pretty enclosed courtyard garden with table and chairs for al-fresco dining. Whilst there is not designated parking space, parking is free all around Alnmouth village.
The Sewing Room is located behind the main street of Alnmouth and entrance is through the old carriage doors just next to The Carriage House. The cobbled pathway leads into the impressive courtyard, directly to a pathway leading to the cottage. The courtyard is divided by a beautiful stone wall which adjoins the two gardens. A solid oak stable door leads straight into the pretty coastal kitchen. The courtyard is straight from the front of the cottage, which is next door to the courtyard of Carriage House.
The gorgeous shaker-style kitchen with a white quartz worktop is well stocked. There is an electric fan oven, 4-ring gas hob, fridge/freezer, washing machine/tumble dryer, microwave, kettle, toaster and cafetiere. The dining table seats 4 guests or you can dine ‘al fresco’ in the courtyard.
Open plan to the kitchen, the lounge is one step down from the kitchen and features a large Smart TV, electric ‘wood burning effect’ fire, a host of books and games, 4-seater corner sofa, armchair with footstool and coffee table.
Serving as a bathroom for guests in the twin bedroom and also a ground floor WC, the shower room contains a walk in shower, basin, WC and heated towel rail. Beautiful ceramic floor tiles are an added feature.
This spacious cupboard is ideal for storage of coats and boots.
Main Bedroom with en-suite
This spacious room contains a king size bed (5ft wide), in-built wardrobe and shelves, as well as a feature ornamental fireplace and mirror above. The en-suite features a walk-in shower with rainfall shower head and attachment, WC, basin, heated towel rail and wall-size mirror. Fluffy towels and luxury linen are provided, as well as a hair dryer.
This quirky bedroom has two single beds (3ft wide), which cannot be joined together. There is a set of drawers and hanging space is located just outside the bedroom, on the landing in a walk-in cupboard. Fluffy towels and luxury linen are provided, as well as a hairdryer with small drawers and a mirror above.
This pretty cottage patio garden features a table with 4 chairs, and is enclosed with flowering borders. The patio is adjacent to the patio area of The Carriage House, divided by a beautiful, low stone wall, with feature decorative rope and an adjoining wooden gate which – whilst separate – is ideal for accessing the whole courtyard when these two properties are booked together, thus accommodating up to 12 guests.
While there is no allocated parking for The Sewing Room, parking is free right along the main street, with bays directly outside The Carriage House. Parking usually isn’t a problem first and last thing in the day, but can get busy in the middle of the day. A disabled parking bay is situated right outside The Carriage House. There are plenty of free bays right along the beach front, moments away from the cottage.

Enjoy Happy Hour at The Italia!
The Italia is an Italian restaurant within the Hope and Anchor pub and the food is great. Their happy hour is perfect for families and is very reasonably priced.
It’s just 5 easy minutes from the cottage so is perfect to head to early-evening and finish off with a stroll along the beach afterwards
Tips from a local
The Red Lion Inn is a really traditional pub with the best atmosphere! They have embraced the classic style and retained its original features, which adds to the cosyness of the true Northumbrian pub. They have a lovely beer garden and a restaurant too and serve a good Sunday lunch. The pub quiz is great and takes place every Tuesday. Dogs can come too!
