Tips from a local
Find some interesting sea-critters in the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Head to the beach and take a left, heading north up the coast. Walk as far as you can and you will reach the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Seals have been spotted on these rocks many times, so you may be lucky! At the south end of the beach there is a pier leading right out with gorgeous views of Coquet Island and Amble Harbour.
Tips from a local
Fancy a short walk around the village? Try the Mill Walk right from the front door of Virginia Cottage. Whether you have a dog or not, this is a very pretty route that only takes about 30-35 minutes. Follow the river from the door and it takes you along a beautiful walk along the Coquet River, eventually ending up at a clearing where The Hermitage is located (see more on the Visit Warkworth page). We’ve spotted kingfishers and deer here a few times, as well as otters and the occasional seal in the river at high-tide!
Tips from a local
Try dining at The Warkworth House Hotel in their ‘Number 16’ bistro. The restaurant caters well for vegetarians and has a good range of local produce. On weekends we would suggest booking in advance.
Reservations Assistant at Coquet Cottages
We asked Kat what she loves most about Virginia Cottage:
“Virginia Cottage is a cosy, country cottage with a quirky layout adding something a bit different to the mix. I love the hallway between the bathroom and kitchen and the stairs leading up to this level give it a bit of a vintage ‘Sylvanian Families’ vibe!
The location of the cottage is fantastic with The Mill Walk along the River Coquet starting right from the doorstep. On the other side of the river there is often foxed and a heron to be seen, giving a real rural feel whilst still having all of the villages’ amenities just 80 yards from the cottage at the top of the little lane. The exterior of the cottage is just as lovely as the inside, wit Virginia Creeper covering the walls, framing the windows and doors – a ‘chocolate box’ cottage in a picturesque village full of character.
Jackie, the owner, tries to holiday in her cottage as much as time permits, she loves that it’s such a home from home – she never wants to leave! She loves that there is so much much to walk to from the cottage that the car is rarely used!”
